View Full Version : Italian hills!

"Italy is a hilly country—hills cover roughly as much of its terrain as mountains do (about 40 percent in each case). The majority of Italy's hills are in the peninsula, in uplands that flank the Apennines on both sides. To the west, this terrain, called the Anti-Apennines, or sub-Apennines, forms a broad band across Tuscany. In the east, hills are found in the regions of Emília-Romagna and Marche. The mountain chains that continue the Apennine system on the island of Sicily also descend to hills in the eastern part of the island."

I know that Calabria is very hilly/mountainous.

yep, according to wikipedia Calabria hills 49,2%, mountains 41,8%, plains occupy only 9%.

Italy is 41,6 % hilly, 35,2 % mountainous, and plains occupy 23,2 %. But most of the plains are the Po Valley.

You're right, Sardinia island bare hills are mainly used for sheep and cows (maybe more sheep than cows in Sardinia). Mens-Sarda can say something more on his land.

British people generally like this kind of hills. Many British moved to Tuscany, Umbria and Liguria.

And something to traverse those hills with: the Elettrotreno ETR 300 “Settebello”:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dSJUGTE5lc

First we'll learn about the original Tuscans — the ancient Etruscans — at Volterra's Etruscan Museum, then we'll tour a hill town that was important to both the Etruscans and the Romans, head into the woods for a truffle hunt, eat slow food Italian-style during Sunday lunch in Chiusure, and finish in Montepulciano, where we'll get passionate about the local wine. © 2006 Rick Steves' Europe

In the Italian countryside, we'll connect with rustic, traditional culture: enjoying an agriturismo (farmhouse inn), seeing how prosciutto and pecorino cheese are made, and hiking to the bottom of deep and ancient wine cellars. We'll end in Assisi — the hometown of St. Francis — which retains its spiritual aura to this day. Like pilgrims, we'll explore its stony center before trekking to its awe-inspiring basilica, built on the tomb of the beloved saint.

The ETR600 is a Pendolino 'tilting trainset' which allows Highspeed services to travel faster on lines which would normally have restricted top speeds due to the curves and allows for a much better passenger experience.

taly is considering building a $7 billion bridge from Calabria to Sicily across the Strait of Messina. It would be both the largest suspension bridge and tallest bridge in the world, making it a feat of engineering. It could boost the local economies, increase tourism, improve relations between the people of southern Italy, and demonstrate Italy’s engineering prowess. However, it would also come with many budget, engineering, and infrastructure issues. Whether it will ever be constructed, we will have to wait and see. Hello, and welcome back to another train trip report, this time from Lake Como in Italy. In this video I will be travelling on the all new Hitachi Caravaggio, a double deck regional train cropping up all over Italy for both Trenitalia and Trenord. This trip starts at the mainline station in Como, that being Como San Giovanni. There is also Como Lago, which is at the end of a branchline. Being surrounded by the Alps and of course Lake Como itself, the departure is very scenic - best enjoyed from the top-deck of course. The train will continue down through various towns, then to Monza, before starting the final approach to Milan, and terminating at Milano Porta Garibaldi. The train's design is certainly unique, with its bright colours and sharp front end. Overall, the interior delivers a decent way to travel for short regional trips. It's the same as the Trenitalia units, which are known as the 'Rock'. With this train being made at the notorious Pistoia factory by Hitachi, I was keen to see how it performed, and to be honest it surprised me! Watch the video to find out why. #trenord (https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=%23trenord) #hitachicaravaggio (https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=%23hitachicaravaggio) #trip (https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=%23trip) report

FEATURE LENGTH video! Here's my trip on the epic Intercity Notte sleeper train from Milan down to Palermo on the island of Sicily. This is a must-complete trip for any serious rail enthusiast - from the awesome Milano Centrale station to the splendid tunnels at Genoa, to the beaches of the Tyrrhenian coast and the unique shunting operation at Villa san Giovanni onto the ferry for the short ride to Messina, this is a train trip that has just about everything (except a DINING CAR!). Thank you for clicking on this video and I hope you enjoy this especially long vlog of this trip, filmed during the gorgeous Italian summer this year.

It's sad, I love those old timey charms about Europe. Tunnels and stuff need a lot of monitoring and maintenance I doubt they really merit the money for how much traffic actually goes through those places.

It's actually one of Europe's main corridors (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helsinki%E2%80%93Valletta_Corridor), so it will take a load of those living in the area. Unfortunately jobs will also be lost.
