Typhoon Rammasun is forecast to make landfall in the Philippines on Tuesday evening, according to a forecast from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center.

The storm should hit Luzon Island with winds of about 92 mph and gusts of 126 mph.

Damaging winds and flooding rainfall are expected across the north-central and northern Philippines as Rammasun moves across the island nation, AccuWeather meteorologist Eric Leister predicts.

At this point, landfall of the center of Rammasun looks likely to the north of the area devastated from Super Typhoon Haiyan, including the city of Tacloban, the Weather Channel forecasts.

Rammasun is Thai for the God of thunder, according to the Weather Channel.

The national weather agency in the Philippines, which has its own separate storm naming system, has named the storm Glenda.

Late in the week, Rammasun should bring flooding rains and damaging winds to southern China, with the greatest impacts likely in Hainan and western Guangdong provinces.

The typhoon is now the equivalent to a Category 1 hurricane, with sustained winds of 85 mph and gusts to 105 mph. Typhoons are the same type of storm as hurricanes. They are known collectively as tropical cyclones.

The Philippines are among the most tropical-cyclone-prone nations on Earth, according to the Weather Channel. Four typhoons made landfall in the Philippines in 2013, the most destructive of which was Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda).
