Considering the recent changes and updates with 23andme, Ancestry, etc, what do we all think is the most effective test for someone who has never had genes tested and computed?
I am planning on ordering a kit from somewhere for my dad to take, for the sake of shedding Some light on the genetic background of my paternal grandmother (who was adopted as an infant).

23andme seems the best by every standard. Personally I'm waiting for full sequencing to bother. But with older family members that's probably a bad idea (possibly even myself if things keep going at this rate ).

Thanks...to me the consensus these days is split pretty evenly between 23andme and Ancestry. Some folks seem rather disenchanted with 23andme now given some update which has supposedly muddied many peoples' results. I don't know much more of the specifics, as I am going by second hand opinions. Also, apparently Ancestry is better than it used to be...(not everyone and their Nigerian cousin is "Orcadian" anymore! lol)

I've done FTDNA and 23andme. 23andme was the better deal by far, FTDNA is only worth it if you manage to get in touch with some relatives or join your surname project. Note that for FTDNA I only ordered y-dna testing, that was my first.

I guess the issue is how things are now considering recent changes with services. I am not one who has ever been tested on these, nor anyone of close relation.

Final thoughts? Consider the latest updates with 23andme. I was decided on the service but grew a tad more skeptical once I learned about a recent update.

I bought FTDNA solely to join the Sicily Project.
23andMe's product is far superior. I don't trust Ancestry DNA, since it is new and run by Mormons... but if it winds up being superior to 23andMe, I'll change my tune.

FTDNA for an Y-DNA test and 23andme for other tests.
