Deduced by male descendant testing, House of Stark, once a powerful royalty of the North at pre-Aegon's Landing period of Westerosi history, claiming the descent from the First Men, was found to have belonged to the haplogroup R1a1a.

All of the scientific world is shaking, since R1a1a is one of the three main haplogroups that were introduced to the Westeros by the Andals that once came from Essos and conquered vast lands( though being stopped by the First Men at the Moat Cailin). What's even more interesting, long-attested rivals of Starks, Lannisters, also belong to an R1a1a haplogroup:
- Whereas Starks belong to an R1a-Z280 subbranch characterised by an SNP called YP327, Lannister belong to Z284 branch. It means that they must have had most recent common ancestor just slightly before the Andal invasion - says the leading project scientist, maester Artos. He quickly adds - "Unlike the descendants of the First Men, who overwhelmingly belong to the haplogroup R1b".
Masters are still working to obtain aDNA from the crypt in the ancient city of Winterfell, tomb where all documented members of the House Stark had their final rest.
- We are going to make use of our newest method of Y-chromosome recognition. Previous methods bore the danger of uncertainty, while we are going to test directly for the occurence of the SNP that designates R1a1a. - maester announced.
Will the aDNA confirm continuity of the Y-chromosomal line in Starks? We don't know for sure but the speculations are already made. It's rumoured that there may be an NPE (non-paternity event) at some point of a history, thus giving an unexpected result. I hope we will know soon enough.
