New revolutionary engine could make UK to Australia flight in four hours

The Skylon will travel even faster than the legendary British Airways Supersonic Concorde Plane
and is expected to replace space rockets

A breakthrough in a rocket-powered superplane project has been revealed by jet experts.

"BRITISH engineers working on a revolutionary superplane project have announced a major breakthrough in engine development that brings their vision of a four hour flight from the UK to Australia one step closer to reality.

It may have taken these experts 30 years to solve the problem of over heating in a rocket jet engine but they have finally done it. The trick to this rocket power was to figure out how to instantly chill the air entering the engine from 1,000°C to minus 150°C.

This phenomenon was described as “the biggest breakthrough since the invention of the jet engine”, by researchers at Reaction Engines, Abingdon.

British Science Minister David Willetts envisaged that the engine known as Sabre, would “revolutionise the future of air and space travel” while Alan Bond, the mastermind behind this new rocket technology, declared this to be the proudest moment of his life, reported The Sun.

The revolutionary ‘air-breathing’ rocket engines, could power superplanes with the capacity to carry 300 passengers.

The futuristic aircraft proposed by the team of UK engineers have the aim of cutting long-haul flight times. A flight from Heathrow to Australia could be cut from 21 hours to a mere four."

This latest engine advancement opens doors for the construction of a reusable space shuttle referred to as Skylon, as well as the Lapcat 4,200mph hypersonic airliner."

Concorde's supersonic cruising speed was Mach 2 (breaking the sound barrier)
- it flew from London to New York in just over three hours.

SKYLON uses SABRE engines in air-breathing mode to accelerate from take-off to Mach 5.5 which allows 1,250 tonnes of atmospheric air to be captured and used in the engines, of which 250 tonnes is oxygen which therefore does not have to be carried in propellant tanks. At Mach 5.5 and 25 kilometres altitude the SABRE engine transitions to its rocket engine mode, using liquid oxygen stored on board SKYLON, to complete its ascent to orbit at a speed of Mach 25. In this space access application, SABRE engines need an operational life of only 55 hours to achieve 200 flights, significantly less than the 10,000s of hours needed for conventional jet engines.

Skylon space plane 'will transform high-speed aviation'

Alan Bond, chief engineer at Reaction Engines, says the ability of the Skylon plane
to transform into a rocket
will open up space travel for the human race.

The Skylon can take off from a standard runway before accelerating to speeds of 19,000 miles per hour taking people to Earth’s stratosphere in just 15 minutes.

Alan Bond, chief designer of the Skylon said the breakthrough on creating a device that can cool the air entering an engine allowing it to operate normally at speeds of Mach 5 will transform high-speed aviation.

"It enables an aeroplane, very much a fast aeroplane, but an aeroplane nonetheless, to take off, accelerate at up to five times the speed of sound, turn itself subtly into a rocket, fly into orbit, do a job and come back again."

"The second thing it enables, is a very high speed terrestrial aircraft. For example an aircraft carrying 300 passengers could go from Europe to Australia in about four hours."

He said: "We are looking at a revolution in transportation equilvent to the jet engine.

"Once you've got access to space on that basis, that is the stepping stone to anywhere in the universe and a very exciting future for the human race."

The Skylon Space Plane will be funded by the UK

David Willetts, Minister for Universities and Science, will reveal the investment in SABRE, a British-designed engine.

SABRE’s creator, Reaction Engines, wants to use the technology on a unique “spaceplane” called Skylon, which will be capable of taking people to Earth’s stratosphere in just 15 minutes. It could also fly from the UK to Australia in four hours.

Skylon is designed to take off from a standard runway before accelerating to speeds of 19,000 miles per hour.

“SABRE has the potential to completely transform how we access space,” Mr Willets, who hopes the technology will create 21,000 jobs, will say at the UK Space Conference in Glasgow.

“By supporting this breakthrough technology we are giving the UK a leading position in a growing market of new generation launchers and removing one of the main barriers to the growth of commercial activity in space.”

"Skylon is likely to be viewed by Sir Richard Branson as a competitior to his Virgin Galactic business. Hundreds of people have so far paid £121,000 each to experience six minutes of weightlessness during one of Sir Richard’s sub-orbital spaceflights. However, unlike Skylon, the billionaire’s spacecraft is launched from a larger plane and not directly from a runway.

The UK Government will also award a £134m contract to Astrium to develop instruments for the next generation of weather satellites.

It's gonna take a bit more than 8km/s to explore the universe, but for commercial aviation or ISS provisioning, sure it could be a revolution. it's an interesting type of engine.

People thought that the English and French couldn't build the Eurotunnel under the sea, or the Supersonic Concorde, nor the Thames Flood Barrier, the London Eye, the world wide web, the first complete bionic man, etc, but they all came to fruition. The Skylon will be another revolutionary achievement for England taking Great Britain ahead into the 21st century!

but it doesn't matter if white people go the way of the Native American of course, the new assimilated Brits will be the exact same thing just with a darker skin tone.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only impatient person for a real simulation. There's a comment for this video. It has been two years since you posted the story and they have not built anything.

You are tracking their progress, so you must be yearning a real video?

I'm glad this isn't just for military but commercial travel.
