Sociologist Geoff Dench found that the proportion of lone mothers had risen from 10 per cent to 25 per cent in the last 20 years.
Mr Dench said: "It seems that lone motherhood is less a result of relationship breakdown, more of a lifestyle choice.
"And the existence of state benefits as a source of economic security seems to be encouraging young mothers not to bother with male resident partners."
The author of the study thinks the government should target out of work men to make them more marriageable again.
