I have only had it once. I should answer "hate it" because I have avoided it ever since but is that fair?

Never heard of it.

Is it anything like brewer's yeast? If so then I would love it. Never tried it though, sadly. I always had a dream to move to australia for some reason but I doubt it will happen now.

It is made from Brewer's yeast. Very salty.

There is a similar one called Vegemite, but I have never tried it.

I've never had it or heard of it. What is it used for?

It is a spread which you eat on bread or toast. In sparing amounts though, because it is very salty.

I LOVE it. I eat it all the time with or without toast. BTW in Australia it's called Vegemite.

Marmite

"You either love it or hate it!''

Marmite (MAR-myt) is the brand name for two similar food spreads:
the original British version, since 2000 a Unilever product;
and a modified version produced in New Zealand by Sanitarium Health Food Company
and distributed in Australia and the Pacific.

Marmite is made from yeast extract, a by-product of beer brewing.

Other similar products include the Australian Vegemite,
which is saltier in taste, the Swiss Cenovis and the German Vitam-R.

The British version of the product is a sticky, dark brown food paste with a distinctive,
powerful flavour, which is salty... but very rich in B vitamins.

A very small and thin amount is spread across toast;
people who aren't used to it often make the mistake of spreading it on heavily
and then spitting it out in shock and disgust. :D

The distinctive taste is reflected in the British company's marketing slogan: "Love it or hate it."

The taste of Twiglets derives from the yeast extract used in its coating,
and has been compared to that of Marmite.

The product's name has entered British English as a metaphor
for something that is an acquired taste or tends to polarise opinions.

A version with a different flavour has been manufactured in New Zealand since 1919.
his is the only product sold as Marmite in Australia and the Pacific,
whereas elsewhere in the world the British version predominates.

The image on the front of the British jar shows a "marmite" (French: [maʁmit]),
a French term for a large, covered earthenware or metal cooking pot.

British Marmite was originally supplied in earthenware pots,
but since the 1920s has been sold in distinctively shaped glass jars.
(It also comes in different jar sizes and also useful squeezable jars can be purchased
which creates less mess and gunk with a flip-top lid.)

I personally love marmite and I've been used to the zingy taste of it
spread very lightly on toast sometimes as a child,
(and it's lovely to eat it on toast strips as a child with a boiled egg... 'egg and soldiers,')
but the facial reactions of non-British people
who try Marmite for the first time is hilarious to watch...

A British infant has his first test of Britishness... Marmite!
The facial reactions are a must-see! :D
(A very tiny amount should only be given to infants for numerous reasons.)

Aussies love their Vegemite (which is saltier in its taste) and Brits prefer Marmite.
Americans give their unbiased views which one they prefer out of the two below.

The facial reactions as they smell it and then taste it is hilarious. :D

Never tried it. But funnily enough I've tried Cenovis, the Swiss equivalent. Was awful.

An American friend of mine is married to a German and they live in England. She once sent me a gift of English food products which included Twiglets and Marmite. The Twiglets were great. But, OH that Marmite. That tarmac of foods. Vile. VILE. "Put a bit on some toast with eggs," she said. "I find it tastes great that way." LIAR.

When I offered some to my ex bf from Marseille, he tried a bit and went; 'what the hell is that?! That is disgusting!' (I could say the same at the thought of eating frogs legs and snails.) He used to watch me eating it on toast in bewilderment over how I could like it and I'd lick my lips and say to him 'mmmm... it's full of B vitamins.'

It's not just yeast. It's a lot of salt and horrible tastes that comes out beer barrels.
