View Full Version : FTDNA vs 23andMe Y-DNA tests

For more accurate y-dna test results, is FTDNA's 67-marker test worth the extra money over 23andMe? For example, say I were to send a sample to both companies and the resulting haplogroup came out to be E-V13 (a reasonable result as it's the third most common haplogroup found in Calabria). What would FTDNA's data show me that 23andMe wouldn't?

minimuim you should get at least a 67 marker but eventually you will want to do snp marker test to find out your subclade. 23 doesn't offer snp subclade test

FTDNA has the snp marker test I take it?

you can when you feel like it, although its better if you get a 111 dna test so that you can use a Y-dna predicter to get better predictions for your subclade.I did that and it helped eliminate a couple of extra snp tests that were not needed I don't remember where I got it from. Just google Y-dna predictor or something similar and see if you find one

In most cases, when you possess one of a well-studied haplogroups ( IJ or R1 paragroup, N1 too), 37-marker test and 1-2 SNP tests should suffice. Just join relevant haplogroup project after you receive your results.

Which company and which SNP test did you use?

FTDNA. I tested R1a-relevant SNP's after I received my 37-marker test results.
