Moldavians speak romanian, the Moldova part from Romania is the "true" Moldova, this is where the greatest moldavians came from.

"Spring of 68. We were invited by friends to explore Tara Oasului (don’t try to pronounce it), along the border with Russia, whose inhabitants are descendants of the Dacians, conquered, barely and temporarily, by the Romans, and mostly left alone by the modern communist government."

This man was just called “mosul,” the old man. He told us he was a hundred years old.

We stopped in one village where our friends (one a poet, one a professor of Romanian literature and her daughter) spoke with a woman who brought out a beautiful and very heavy blanket of mohair, called a tol (pronounced “tsol.” We still have it on a window seat in the house.

Since many of the little communities had no road to them, we hiked along little water buffalo trails, where we encountered this man and his family, who invited us to the weekly Sunday village dance:

The people of Tara Oasului are known for their fierceness and refusal to be subjugated. Ceausescu’s prisons held a large number of them. There are no police in the area. We were told they wouldn’t last long. The men whipped out knives an offered to give us a demonstration, all in good humor:

Naturally there was no refusing the offer of drinking the home brew 140 proof plum brandy, as you can tell by the look on the Romanian professor’s face.
