View Full Version : Which city is worse? Skopje or Sarajevo?

Both cities are muslim-infested, except Skopje's Muslims are a bit less radical but it has its share of Turks which increase the level of radicalism of Islam in Skopje. I've been to Sarajevo and I can't say I was too impressed... The city was largely damaged during the civil war so they have a good excuse. But Skopje today is getting more and more ridiculous with it building all things related to ancient Macedonians and foregoing their Slavic heritage completely. So, Skopje loses a point from me for that. Personally, both cities are not too great but I'd think Sarajevo to be better than Skopje because it still retain some pretty architecture and people in general is really friendly there. Not the same can be said of Skopje where it's overflowing with gypsies, Macedonian fascists and their general hatred of anything non-Macedonian.

That's true, I forgot to add that point. FYROMians are exorbitantly anti-Bulgarian despite the majority of them having Bulgarian roots.

If you don't want to be Bulgarian, yes.

The case of FYROM isn't very complex to the experienced eye but to the novices it can be. FYROM's location today is where the Turkish vilayet (province) of Macedonia used to be. And a lot of Bulgarians lived in that vilayet with Greeks crowding the coastal towns. And those Bulgarians called themselves Macedonian because they lived in the vilayet named Macedonia not because they viewed themselves as descendants of Megas Alexandros. The claiming lineage to Megas Alexandros is a recent thing initially started by Stalin who wanted to incorporate the Greek province of Macedonia. He had the Bulgarians in the province of Blagoevgrad forcibly re-identify themselves as Macedonian not Bulgarian and this was carried out by Georgi Dimitrov (a famous Bulgarian communist in league with Stalin and partially with Tito who planned the incorporation of Bulgaria and Macedonia as whole before the Tito-Stalin split). Obviously when the communists lost the civil war in Greece and the idea was thrown out but the people there just kept using the name Macedonia and Macedonians as their ancestors had and now with the age of information here -- they were able to put 1 and 1 together that the name is related to the ancient people of Macedonia who conquered more than half of the known world at the time.

The vilifying of Bulgarians in FYROM is also a recent thing started by radical nationalists in FYROM because they want to claim the history of IMRO as their own, not Bulgaria's. And a lot of their national heroes are Bulgarians but they continue to deny that they are Bulgarians but Macedonians. Just fucking ridiculous.

Misinformation and propaganda. They're trying to take a page out of the Jews' handbook which is to claim things like genocide so they can get what they want which is the creation of a "Greater Macedonia". But good luck filling all that land with only 1 million FYROMians, lol...

I've always found it difficult to understand why the Bulgarians seem to care so much about the Macedonians. Not that I'm taking sides here, of course.

As for the cities in question, I wouldn't know which one is 'worse', since I haven't visited any of the two so far.

Maybe because we Bulgarians consider the Macedonians to be our brother people? It is true since the Macedonian language Macedonians speak today is very close to Bulgarian than any other language. The only big difference between both countries' language is the alphabet. And many Bulgarians I know would like to see Bulgaria regain 1944 borders. I am not really for Bulgarian nationalism though but rather a Yugoslav one. That isn't really possible right now since Yugoslavia proper has been gone for 20 years now.

Don't be, the poll may sound odd but those two cities are notorious for being two worst cities in Yugoslavia.

I was born in Sarajevo, well there are good and bad things about the city, but I must say that irrelevant of the city the landscape around the city is wonderful, with lovely mountains and headwaters where you can drink the best water that can be. Also Sarajevo is 300 m higher than Skopje so the air is more fresh. But I can't vote as I have never been to Skopje, I passed by but haven't seen much of it.
I understand the aversion you might have with the oldest part of city, with eastern architecture but that part is quite small and cramped, the Austrians have build next to it their center of the town with a very nice architecture. Too bad they didn't stay for more than 4 decades, the muslims could have been deislamified by now but such is life. Now I think they built some skyscrapers,I always like skyscrapers so that might improve the overall image. But I don't appreciate some new arab funded mosques, but those are a problem these days in Western Europe too or around the whole globe pretty much. Arabs got lucky with oil reserves so now they spread their arab supremacist ideology that is Islam.

It is true since the Macedonian language Macedonians speak today is very close to Bulgarian than any other language. The only big difference between both countries' language is the alphabet.

Standard Croatian and Serbian languages are largely based on the same dialect ('novoštokavski'), and are thus even more mutually intelligible than Bulgarian and Macedonian are, and yet, we're two distinct peoples. However, our language, with all its peculiarities, is one of the pillars of our identity. I would guess the attitude towards language is not considerably different in Bulgaria or Macedonia.

Yeah, that is quite natural and to be expected of with the government propagating anti-Bulgarian feelings in FYROM.

However, our language, with all its peculiarities, is one of the pillars of our identity. I would guess the attitude towards language is not considerably different in Bulgaria or Macedonia.Yeah, Serbs and Croats have similar language but are a bit different because of the rugged Balkan terrain which gave cause to both people to develop separately. The case of FYROM is those people used to call themselves Bulgarians before 1947. If the Axis had won WW2, there would be no FYROM, no ridiculous stealing of Greek history but those people would be proud Bulgarians today. FYROMians celebrate Bulgarian national heroes as Macedonian. I doubt the Croats celebrate Serb national heroes like Macedonians have. Why? Because they are the one and the same.

In my view the bulk of Macedonians share a link with Bulgarians, maybe a minority with Serbs, but if they want to consider themselves separate I can't stop them.;) But claiming to be direct descendants of Alexander is a bit far fetched. It is possible that there are some people with a link to ancient Macedon, though still, in that case, they would have to speak Greek for start, if that is to be emphasized.

A serb saying that Sarajevo has nothing to do with Srbija... interesting :D
Monolith, do you know why the Bulgarians are so interested in Macedonia? It's because about 30% of Bulgarians have Macedonian roots. It's because 600 000 Bulgarians live in Pirin Macedonia. They speak the same dialect like the Macedonians, they sing the same songs, share the same customs and traditions. But they are Bulgarians.
We, the Bulgarians, haven't been a part of Yugoslavia. The appearance of 57656455868 nations and languages per year is not usual for us. My cousins should be from my nation - there are two possibilities - we're all Bulgarians, or we're all Macedonians.
Everything else is a post-yugo crap ;)

Many did what he did, move out after the war, i.e.. There probably isn't any real statistics from Yugoslavia times saying how many Croats there were in Sarajevo, right?

Some moved out during the war too I suppose (but as far as I understood it was extremely dangerous to try that).

Ooh, I love scenery like this. Reminds me of Circassia. Is it far out of town? :thumb001:

First 2 pictures are from mountain Treskavica (6850 ft), it's a quite wild and beautiful mountain, unfortunately during the war the front was located on it, but it's cleansed from mines now. It's around 12 miles south of the city. the mountain has a steep and attractive northern side facing Sarajevo seen here:

http://www.hrphotocontest.com/data/gallery1/100673/87822.jpg

There are many beautiful lakes on it. Here's video of black and grand lakes.

3rd photo is of Skakavac (grasshopper) waterfall located on a mountain Ozren 7 miles north of city, the waterfall is 98 m tall, with attractive scenery around.

20 minutes from the city center by car? I believe I once made it :D

During summer time I enjoy wallking from Barice to the Skakavac waterfall by foot. Takes around 4 to 5 hours I guess. 3 if you are jogging. :)

A few photos from Barice:

It's directly over Sarajevo, right next to the city as you can see:

Both cities are still recovering. Skopje from a deadly earthquake in 1963 which destroyed 80% of the city. I like some of Sarajevo's architecture and Skopje, despite currently being a large construction zone is coming along nicely.

in terms of architecture, coming from Skopje, i must say its a hell of a mess of a city, u see every kind of architecture around the city, mostly bruatlist scary communist blocks that still give the city a dark image. otherwise people, n staff happening around, its a pretty mean city :)

Sarajevo had it's charm before the war but it's not the same city today. You can occasionally see bearded men who could easily pass for an Afghan mujahedin or women, even younger, wearing hijabs and other stupid islamic clothing. City itself is beautiful with nice architectural mix. I would enjoy living in Sarajevo... if this was 1980.

Skopje has entire neighborhoods populated by Albanians, which is bad and makes it very bad for living because unrests and future ethnic conflicts inside the city are quite possible. In fact, they're already happening on smaller scale.

^^Yes, mujahedeen will kill you in Sarajevo it's so dangerous for Serbs there

I have been to Skopje, in some ways it reminds me of Sarajevo since it has both a modern part and a Oriental part. In Sarajevo the Bascarsija (old town) area is the prettiest, cleanest and most well kept part, while the old carsija in Skopje is much more run down and dirty.

On the other hand Makedonska Ulica in Skopje looks better then Ferhadija in Sarajevo but I also think Titova (stretch from Vjecna Vatra to BBI) looks better then Ferhadija.

Pluses for Sarajevo are Vrelo Bosne and Ilidza with the park and hotels, while for Skopje it seems more "open" because it isn't situated in a valley like Sarajevo. So the air quality is better in Skopje too.

Yes, there is a lot considering the small period they were here (just from 1878 to 1918). The entire main pedestrian street (Ferhadija + Titova) is Austro-Hungarian in architecture.

That's one of the advantages Sarajevo has over Skopje. Also Skopje had a big earthquake which ruined most old buildings.

Each city has it's own unique charm and pace, to compare two cities influenced in a different ways is pointless.

They are both nice cities I guess, but I think Skopje is a bit better, they even have a huge statue of Greeks such as Alexander the Great! :D Amazing statue guys!

I agree. But I think the person who made this thread thought both cities are ugly and worth mocking. When in reality, both Skopje and Sarajevo, despite their troubled past, are being rebuilt and will catch up to the rest of Europe soon.

Probably not. Western Europe will always be ahead of the former Yugoslav states.

Sarejevo has the history behind it but Skopje is actually a very good city.

Skopje is much older than Sarajevo.

Skopje is much older than Sarajevo.

Sure in terms of date of settlements but Skopje was pretty much destroyed after the 1963 earthquake so I consider it "newer"

Not to mention Sarajevo hosted the Olympics and was know to be a multi-ethnic/religious city for centuries(up until the war)

Didnt expect Sarajevo to have such a decent architecture. I see no scars of the war in the photos.

I have chosen to present the most pretty sides of the city in this thread (because of the title and prejudices)

War remnants are still visible in the city.
