View Full Version : Slovenia a balkan country?

Do you consider Slovenia a balkan(southeast and south european) country or a central european one? I am not sure, but tend to think southern because it's south of the main chain of the Alps, has a part of the dinaric mountains and adriatic coast line, not to mention a substantial part is in the Balkan peninsula. Also what other south slavic people is not a balkan people? What do you think and explain why.

Balkan is worthless label. In reality Balkan is where Slavic, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cultures intersect. Most Balkan country for that reason would be Bulgaria and Macedonia.

middle eastern ?

Turkish cultural influence which was heavily based in byzantine influence which in turn received a lot of the eastern roman helleno-near eastern as well as persian influence.

Don't forget that the Seleucids and the Sassanids had a major impact in Syria and Mesopotamia which were the scientific and cultural centers of the middle and later roman world.

Maybe better comparison is Czechs. Fellow slavs, and very similar to Slovenes. They are very mild mannered, orderly, and not what is stereotype of Balkan.

Why ...Croatia and Slovenia are Balkans..

Croatia lacks many of the cultural influences that all other Balkan countries have, and they are more linked to Central Europe and Italy.

Well, for most of the middle and modern period, albania and co were part of the byzantine and ottoman empires whereas croatia and slovenia were under austria's sphere, so some differences in general outlook and survival values would develop.

Aren't they at least geographically Balkan or Southern European?

Have no fear, Vuco (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81c2cv6MqbA) is here!

Slovenia is slowly being Balkanized by gastarbeiters as well.

What does a Bosnian do when he reaches adulthood?Goes to Slovenia in search of work!

Sounds more Polish than Balkan.

When I think "Balkan" music, I will always use this as an example, since it's an Albanian song that has been repackaged and translated into Greek, and I can't imagine it being from elsewhere.

So Vuco is the best thing you can come up with? Vuco is a local phenomenon, a joke, rather than a rule, especially his music for a region.

South Slavic with an heavy central european (and Adriatic, so venetic-furlanish) influence.

Severina and Rozga? They don't sound different to me than "our" stuff that gets played in night clubs.

Vuco is not a joke, Vuco is a way of life!

I've been there and it felt similar to Czech Republic, Swiss or even Hungary. Different to Southern Balkans but still traditional and homely feel to it. So I would say it has Central European feel to it as a whole with some "Balkan" influence due to proximity and shared history.

All jokes asides, yes, the Croatians don't feel Balkan to me (and I'm just talking about ones from Slavonia, which is like freaking 10 miles away from me). They're usually condensing towards us and make trips into Bosnia seem like safari when they come here, and frankly speaking they come off quite queer with their speech.

I tend to think Balkan area is just a geographic region with much cultural, religious and ethnic diversity. It has been ruled by many empires and divided by them often, so you get many influences, that are not evenly spread and not all peoples and countries have to be the same.

Their original fatherland was Holy Roman Empire and later the Habsburg Monarchy, if we don't consider the relatively short lived slavic realm of Caranthania.

The music of those three (I doubt you can come up with the fourth one and that joke of a song of Vuco there is particularly Balkan sounding) is certainly the most Balkan influenced, but quite far from some of your stuff you won't find there.

You won't find shit like this there:

The shit above is widely popular across Balkans except in Croatia where it has the least support, especially in southern regions ironically. You won't find people singing that shit in front of TV here. Others try to equate Severina's and Rozga's singing with this shit.

I think it is classed as a South Slavic language because of reasons which have nothing to do with geography, but still that is not important since it is still a more Central European country.

That small part that you say is only Balkan is not that small a part of a small country. It is south of Alps just like North Italy, right next to it. To me Balkan is just geographic region. Of course catholic and ex-habsburg Slovenia is not like Greece,Albania or Bulgaria.

Your thread is related to geography, but it seems some people missed the point. However, your question is not easy to answer. Geographically Slovenia is overwhemingly a Central European country. For some it may not be Balkans, but is still seen as a Southern European country.

That is true that Slovenia as far as the nature, architecture and maybe even culture is closer to Austria and Italy, but mentality of the people is closer to Balkan than Austrians. It is somehow between: hard-working people, but not so much as Austrians. Still like to sit around at caffes, don't worry 'so much' - closer to Balkan.

I would say that Slovenia is South-Central Europe.

Central Europeans, literally miserable Balkan influence, almost none. Except if it was brought by numerous Serb and Bosniak immigrants.
If Slovaks and Czechs are Central Europeans so are Slovenians.
