probably both? i know some people here who are mixed sicilian/southern italian and irish and they could pass in either country. probably not typical of southern italian though if they have light hair.

Despite the fact that they are light they don't look irish, they look more like southern europeans,so i will go with sicily.

Would you have said Greece over Ireland if I replaced Sicily with Greece?

sicily

Sikeliot

sicily

Why?

Sikeliot
09-15-2014, 02:16 PM
To my eyes they don't look Irish, but there is far too much Northern influence and western to be Sicilian.

Hadouken
09-15-2014, 02:16 PM
Why?

they look more southern european than northern/northwestern european

So they'd fit better on a Greek island or in Malta than in Ireland too?

Yes,the majority of them look clearly southern.

need to ask my brother he has been to malta for 3 weeks this year I will show him the pics and ask if they can fit there

dont know about Greek "Islands" but when I look at Cretan photos/videos and compare to Irish then yes they fit better in Crete than Ireland ...dont know if you count Crete as one the Islands you mean

Greece, some women even have common appearances.

I'll trust all of you on this one, but to my eyes they look more Celtic.

Cretans look like other Greek islanders. So if they fit better in Crete than Ireland, then they'd fit better in Chios and Lesbos too. Not saying I agree but they go hand in hand.

Maybe it's their pinkish white skin and the light brown hair that might trick you

But features wise they are clearly Southwestern Euros (esp the 2nd pic)

So do you think they overlap with the Pontid type of Greek?

Some of them yes.(the women mainly)

Others are too longheaded to be Pontids even.

Ok so maybe I just have a bizarre idea of what Southern European looks like, because to me these people don't fit it.

People tend to underestimate the amount of light (hair and eyes) individuals in greece. They aren't the majority but they are a strong and very visible minority.

Lots of group photos have been posted here, from school classes, clubs, culture unions etc. Not cherry picked individuals but big groups from all over greece.

If there weren't that many, me and faklon would be stuck out like a sore thumb in a sea of Cassandrinos.

I have always maintained there are substantial minorities of light Greeks, but these people look more Irish to me than like how light Greeks look.

A lot of them have very southern features. Many irish tend to look southern-shifted too. But these Basques are mostly southern so most likely SE than ireland.

They don't look Irish so I'll say Sicily. There are a few in the group that are obviously not Irish.

Do they look Sicilian, though? Or did you just choose it because they don't look Irish?

How can the Irish look southern shifted when they are north western European?

I don't know if they are Sicilian but they look like they might be Spanish from their features.

Nordomed phenotype was apparently first based on irishmen. Right man is irish btw.

I can pull the quotes for you if you'd like

The reason why I knew they weren't Irish was because of their features. If you look at the girls in the top row who are 5 and 6 and in the second row the first 5 girls it is obvious they aren't Irish. Some of them would pass but the group they don't look Irish even some of the light ones. Also some Irish people have dark hair but it is the features that make them different.

Those men look Irish to me. I don't see what's Mediterranean about them and the Irish by genetics are definitely not southern shifted. You can find men like those in all groups of people.

The man on the right looks like the dude who sells ice cream in my home village.

But you are spot on about what you said. The people in this thread look too southern to pass as irish.

Sure you get Irishmen that are dark and some Irish people can look a bit exotic but that is no different than any population. The Irish on a whole look like most other North Western Europeans and genetics shows that this is what they are. I think you can tell people by their features over colouring but in the picture you posted I would have thought that Irishman was Italian over Irish. He would be quite handsome without that hairstyle. :)
