Okay so like if someone is part say African thousands of years ago does that show in DNA? Like does very distant ancestry not show in DNA or does it record all ancestry?
Thanks.

I think this is an important question. This would answer the question on 'Irishness' and etc.
If it shows in your dna than yes if it doesn't than that obviously means it's too far back....

Awww lawdy, Ah hears dem jungle drums, boss!
Oh, and no. I don't think anything from one thousand years ago really matters. But then again, it's not really from one thousand years ago, but has continued through your bloodline since. You may get results from some tests telling you you're some tiny fraction of a percent X, Y, or Z, but most people have that, and it's often just "noise".

Can I ask you something? Why do you put your ethnicity as Italian, English etc. when you are not from those countries????

Your ethnicity would probably just be Murican.
Is ancestry important to you? Why?

I guess... but are nationality and ethnicity really the same thing?
I got somewhat interested in ancestry from contemplating history, and ancient history in particular, and drawing parallels between the ancients and modern peoples; Romans, Greeks, Celtic and Germanic folks- their ancestors live on today, in some form or fashion and I find that interesting.
I could ask you the same question.

Well I also find ancestry very interesting. I really don't know what ethnicity means and I have been trying to figure it out ever since I join this forum. I think it means nationality.

Here's a dictionary definition: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/ethnicity?s=t
I know it comes from Greek "ethnos", which basically "people" or "tribe". I think in Koine it refered to the pagans, but anyway, I feel it means more than just what piece of rock you happened to be born upon.

Well I think it has more to do with culture but most Americans have an American culture and therefore are ethnic Americans.
If it refers to blood or ancestry than I'm not sure but from my understanding it is more of a cultural label. In fact I have heard you can convert from one ethnic group to another.

This might help: http://dnamatches.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/autosomal-dna-testing-recombination.html
I was thinking of starting a thread on it.

If your direct paternal or maternal ancestors are African, then you carry their yDNA or mtDNA respectively.
your DNA does not contain info about every single ancestor of yours as you carry only a limited amount of chromosomes, genes and molecules. Here is a table showing how much DNA on average you'll share with each generation:
http://genetics.thetech.org/sites/default/files/TablePercentRelation.gif
Another thing that should be pointed out is, if your ancestors admixed with African(s) that long ago, it means practically everyone in your population (say, British) has ancestry that mixed with your own mixed ancestors. Genetic impact of several Africans would distribute very thinly over many generations until it diminishes at a certain point (except yDNA/mtDNA, if Africans' direct male or female ancestors happen to survive to this day which is not very likely). Genetic impact of your African ancestry would not diminish and 'expire' at some point, if a whole population mixed with Africans. In that case, distribution of africans' genetic impact would be be thicker and every ancestor of yours (up to your parents and ultimately you) would have a higher chance to inherit their genes.
