My off the cuff impression is that Bulgarians are corrupt, thin-skinned villains. If I ever visit the country, or meet a real live Bulgarian, I expect that impression to be quickly dispelled. The villain image goes back to the assassins that used a poison-tipped umbrella on some dissident living in London. That was a very Tintinesque touch, or was it James Bond? The thin-skinned impression was made by those diplomats last year that whined about Bulgaria's inclusion in David Cerny's infamous sculpture about European stereotypes in Brussels.

My opinion of Bulgarians, so far, judging from the ones I've met on- and offline, as well as hearing about them from a Greek friend that lives in Varna, is overall very positive.

We do seem to have a lot in common and overall I get along fine with them. So I tend to hold them in much higher respect than the rest of Greece's neighbors.

Linguistic, yes, but it's also controversial. As for cultural, we are Eastern Europeans, which is not equal with Slavic, however often mistaken for.

I don't see anything controversial about it. We use, no, we practically invented the Cyrillic alphabet (although two Greeks gave birth to original Glagonitic alphabet which the present Cyrillic alphabet evolved from). It's an alphabet that is used by a lot of Slavs. The Serbs, the Montenegrins, the Macedonians, the Russians, the Belarusians, the Ukrainians and us. Our culture is also isn't too different from say, the Serbs. Our religion is essentially similar to other Slavic countries excluding Pope-loving Slavic countries. ;) Our language is definitely Slavic, we share basic similarities with other Slavic-speaking languages (but I emphasize basic). We are in essence Slavic, there's no doubt about it. Food? We share basic similarities with other neighboring Slavic countries such as Serbia or Macedonia (even more so with Macedonia). If we're not Slavs then what exactly are we? ;)

So basically your language makes you Slavs? Religion doesn't have anything to do with it any more, or are Catholic Slavs no longer Slavs? As for cuisine... I'm sure Hungarians, Romanians, Greeks and even Turks have a lot in common with you.

Try finding things that actually define you as Slavs - tradition!

There was a good reason when Russia dropped support of Bulgaria in the 1800s. Today they again have good reason to drop support of Bulgaria in favor of Serbia. Corruption is rampant in Bulgaria, when the Russians realized they couldn't get anything done in Bulgaria they just said fuck 'em, we're going to Serbia (http://www.theapricity.com/forum/showthread.php?t=25166), they're much more reliable and we can actually get things done there.

Natives of Finland; Finlanders. • A branch of the Mongolian race, inhabiting Northern and Eastern Europe, including the Magyars, Bulgarians, Permians, Lapps, and Finlanders.

Migrating at the same time as the Anglo-Saxons were the Slavs. These were a people who spoke an Indo-European language, suggesting they were Aryan. They were polytheists, with shamans, and still believed in sacrificing creatures as gifts to the gods.

The Slavs expanded in various directions from the plains north of the Black Sea. Moving northward, they followed rivers, passed through forests and mixed with Finns and Baltic peoples. From the 540s to the 580s they moved south into the Balkans -- a part of Constantinople's empire -- as far south as central Greece, and they approached Adrianople. Constantinople's Byzantine emperor, Maurice, who ruled from 582 to 602 and spent many years warring against them, wrote:
They have abundance of cattle and grain, chiefly millet and rye, but rulers they cannot bear and they live side by side in disunion.

Mmmh what? Got my doubts, but ...anyway:confused: so the Slavs were Mongolians? I cant see the connection in this text between 'Mongolian race' and 'Slavs'..anyway :)

My post is highlighting that as the Slavs swept south they encountered Finns already in the area.

Moving northward, they followed rivers, passed through forests and mixed with Finns and Baltic peoples. From the 540s to the 580s they moved south into the Balkans -- a part of Constantinople's empire -- as far south as central Greece, and they approached Adrianople.

Their language (in the Finno-Ugric family of the Ural-Altaic group) is related to that of the Finns who cross the Baltic in about AD 100 and push the Lapps north towards the Arctic. The Lapps are subject to the same pressure in Norway and Sweden, but there the tribes displacing them are Indo-Europeans speaking the Germanic group of languages.

Sorry for the OT. Buy yeah. Here's a little article (http://www.historyworld.net/wrldhis/PlainTextHistories.asp?historyid=ad02) and some maps (http://data.lnb.lv/nba05/kartes/Html/skandinavija.htm).

:rotfl: Funny stuff!

Seriously Germanicus, you need to do a little updating in your personal library by books written after the 19th century. :D

They're some migrating Turks coming from North of Khazaristan that assimilated a great number of Thracians, only to be assimilated later by Slavs.

Why are you bumping this idiotic thread?

Just wow at one of our current admins comments about Bulgarians. No wonder I'm not surprised he posted so many gypsies as Bulgarians.

They come from time to time but don't post. I have seen Lithium reading topics and Tabiti was last online less than a month ago.
