Prof dr. Sorin Oprescu, Primarul General al Municipiului Bucuresti:

“Our city dates back to 555 years ago and it represents the most significant departure point for a Romanian tour. It is also the most popular city, an industrial, commercial and cultural center of our country. Bucharest shelters almost 2,3 millions of inhabitants making it the 10th largest city in the European Union ranked by population. In fact, the city accommodates over three million people daily while the experts forecast a total of over four million for the next five years. Almost a quarter of the Gross National Product will be ensured here.

The interwar period entitled Bucharest to be called “Littile Paris” thanks to its elegant architecture, glamorous cultural and social life. We are proud to have an Arch of Triumph along the impressive Kiseleff Boulevard, even longer than Champs Elysees where everyone can admire the magnificent trees in bloom during springtime.

Despite the intensive program of building reconstruction from the 80’s, Bucharest remains a city of parks, a pleasant and green place, endowed with coffee houses opened on sidewalks during summer and boats on the city rivers and lakes. Nowadays the city is an amalgam of old and new, traditional and modern, Orient and Occident, bestowing an eclectic and unorganized aspect to our Capital on one hand, and an original and charming side on the other hand.

Bucharest enjoys the “attractions” of a great European city worth visiting. This flourishing metropolis is able to check on each touristic asset and comply to any standard of touristic requirements. Our city is a place rich in history and culture where diversity and contrasts rule, but it doesn’t lack elegance and refinement.

According to every tourist, Bucharest is endowed with a “ turmoil” of interesting objectives, beginning with religious buildings – today historic monuments – sheltering ancient original icons. I mention only a few of them: Kretzulescu Church, Stavropoleus Church, Romanian Patriarchy.

Museums represent the city cornerstone. For example, the Village Museum, in open air, located in Herastrau Park, close to the Arch of Triumph. Here one may admire examples of architecture and traditional crafts all around Romania, including the famous wood churches from Maramureș. Other “compulsory” objectives are the National Art Museum hosted inside the building of the former Royal Palace, the National Museum of History on Victoriei Street sheltering the wonderful silverware of the National Thesaurus of Romania and the Old Court with its small church painted in the 16th century.

The Old City, a history-loaded place is now situated in the heart of Bucharest. The preservation, modernization and restoration works rolled off by far represent a first step to revive this space and recreate it to the European standards. Old houses dating back to the last two centuries, a few modern buildings keeping a historic perfume, a multitude of terraces, clubs and restaurants, a few boutiques and commercial workshops similar to the old traditional ones transform the Historic Centre of Bucharest into a lively place, day and night. The city artistic life has always measured up to its Parisian nickname and today is more attractive than ever. The National Opera House preserves a classical repertoire – Puccini, Verdi, Rossini, Mozart, while the street events organized in Bucharest are a true delight to hundreds of people watching them. The splendid Neo-classical building of the Romanian Athenaeum hosted international concerts, such as George Enescu festival, putting our country on the map of the world music elite.

The National Arena, ready in 2011, Bucharest could enter the exclusivist group of world capitals capable to organize a wide scope of events. Two years ago, UEFA Europa League Final was held in Bucharest and it proved the world that we have a five stars football arena and a hospitable people. Ten thousands tourists visited our Capital in one single day –the Final Day- but our organising capacity was praised by everyone, including the international press.

Important concert organizers are looking to book our Arena and the shows delivered here are internationally recognized, bringing us visitors from neighbouring countries, a fact that rejoice our hearts. Consequently, our future projects include a large Polyvalent Hall and an impressive Concert Hall.

I invite you all to visit this extraordinary city, discover its mystery and feel the pulse of “Little Paris”. Because Bucharest is always ready to surprise its guests with its eternal and full of contrasts poetic beauty.”

About Bucharest

In the MiddleAges, Greeks called Bucharest “Hilariopolis – The City of Joy”, while in the 1800s it was worth the name “Le Petit Paris”, for everything it represented then. Nowadays, BUCHAREST, Capital of ROMANIA represents an authentic modern citadel built with an European style.

The glory of founding this city seems to be disputed between Bucur the Shepherd, the traditional candidate and Vlad the Impellor, the man of the first documented mention which places the existence of our Capital on 20th September 1459. Historic researches and chiefly the archeological ones brought to light the vestiges of a fortress dating back to the second half of the 14th century. “The town of Bucharest” is born then and the Court of the Prince, Mircea Ciobanu’s church (1558-1559), the merchants and the craftsmen small alleys are founded around this first fortress, thus creating the political and cultural town.

The town developed itself step by step, gathering the villages around the old historic center. Dâmbovița river became a town link deeply adapted to its natural dimensions, expanding chiefly towards northern part, to the lakes zone. The memory of those old villages has been kept inside every dweller’s mind when mentioning familiar names like Berceni, Floreasca, Colentina or Pantelimon as component parts of the Capital.

In 1659, Bucharest became permanently the Capital of Wallachia. The city continued to enlarge itself, numerous churches were erected, better fortified inns and the first paved street with wood beams, Mogoșoaia Bridge (1692), subsequently renamed Victoriei Street in 1878. Văcărești monastery was built in 1724, a true masterpiece fitting entirely Brâncoveanu style architecture, sadly demolished by the Communist regime.

In the 19th century the city began to modernize, being chosen as Capital of Romania after the Union between Moldavia and Wallachia in 1862. Bucharest was the largest city in the south-eastern part of Europe after Istanbul.

Wood pavement was first introduced, followed by Sicilian and Scotland granit, afterwards city illumination system, sewage and public parks. The reign of Carol I (1866-1914) represents the age of the most representative buildings for Bucur’s town: the Romanian Athenaeum (1888), Carol I Royal Foundation Palace(1891), the Ministry of Agriculture, the Palace of Justice, the Post Palace, Sturdza Palace, CEC Palace, the Patriarchy Palace, the Military Circle, Athenee Palace Hotel and so on.

At the end of the World War I Bucharest became one of the most beautiful European capital cities, its glamorous cultural and social life, the atmosphere and architecture entitled our city to be called “Little Paris”.

Unfortunately, its natural developing was disconnected by the Communist regime. The city was converted into a devastating urban experiment as hundreds of people were brought here during the industrialization process. These “outlandish” people were accommodated in blocks of flats forming the so-called working class districts of Bucharest. An area equal to Venice was demolished by Ceaușescu’s dictature in order to built the actual Palace of Parliament. Dozens of churches, among them exceptional monuments were put down to earth: the Sf. Vineri Church, Văcărești Monastery, Enei Church etc.

Nowadays, the city represents a mix of old and new, traditional and modern, Orient and Occident, bestowing an eclectic and unorganized aspect to our Capital on one hand, and an original and charming side on the other hand.

Old Bucharest was so beautiful... but the communists destroyed it. And I'm from a rival city for Bucharest :)
