Classify French inventor. Is he SSA admixed?

Charles Cros is french poet and inventor. He invented sound recording(phonograph) before Edison and color photography(subtractive metod) before Duron. The guy is genius. But he looks like a black guy and not white French.

Atypical for a Frenchman obviously. Probably could pass in North Africa. I wonder if he had any non-French ancestry (atypical Iberian maybe?).
