Dear Indian Government Website!

My name is ....., im born in 1983 in republic of serbia as
serbian nationality, in 1990 i moved to austria and now im austrian
citizen since 2006. I have ethnic romani ancestry, i can also prove
with genetic test that i trace my lineage to india (romanis are people
who originated in india 1000 years ago i think). I did a genetic test
with 23andme and Familytreedna, also it is visible that i have
partially indian features and a darker skin tone etc. im 56.25% romani
and on my genetic test i was in the range of 14-30% southasian. It is
all complicated i could be more southasian though, because it is old
ancestry and those are not peer reviewed studies like from scientists,
etc. but they are reliable, also i was related to all ethnic roma and
part roma etc. on the dna relatives tool. so im ethnic roma can prove
it genetically but also my uncle in serbia and my family are visible
southasian influenced (dark brown skin) and dark eyes etc. black hair
etc. they retain southasian features. and they are known by their
neigbours as romani, and they are also registered in romani
organisations.
i would like to ask if i can submit a application for person of indian
origin card or if that is not possible for romani etc.

i add my genetic results and picture of me

regards, ..... http://india.gov.in/

will be interesting if they answer, normally most governments ignore letters and such.

Depends to whom has he written.
I once managed to exchange a series of mails with an official of the Foreign Ministry of New Zealand, asking for specific data regarding legal procedures for a few ítems I needed information on. She was polite and replied to me thrice with a few useful references. After that I realised I wouldn't be getting much more out of her, so I simply stopped messaging.

The Indian government has long been a supporter of Romani culture, human rights and advocacy. The Roma people are eligible to claim a PIO card (Person of Indian Origin) and can obtain Indian citizenship quite easily, as many Indian diasporas will find world-over, from Trinidad to Uganda.

they wrote me back with a link to application. it was specified that you need to have been indian citizen at some point, or that one of your grandparents or great grandparents was indian citizen. none of my grandparents was indian citizen, i asked specifically again about romani and refferred to the wikipedia article about romani where it says they are a ethnic group of indian origin.

So, what happens now? No free visa for India? Dammit. Have you ever visited Liechtenstein? Do you need a visa for Liechtenstein? Maybe you should visit Liechtenstein instead...

You should return back to Serbia

i didnt wanted to move to india though, just to visa free travel and to able to identify myself with the card, that im person of indian origin. also it was more general idea, because i think romas should have it. so i asked and was curious what they will say. since my last update they didnt replied back to me. it is ideological nature, because i think india should accept romas as people of indian origin.

Yes, you have 0,0001% of Indian blood, thus India must accept you as a person of Indian origin.

Now that I'm thinking of it, I should contact the Aliens' embassy, and ask them if they can give me a free passport, a visa for the Alpha Centauris III planet... I must have some Alpha Centauris blood in me...

im not eligible for pio but i found overseas indians (indian diaspora)

dear secretary of overseas indian affairs, i checked the pio card
application and i was not eligible because you need to have been
indian passport holder at some point or your great grandparents but im
romani (not to be confused with romanian unrelated ethnic group and
nation in europe). a romani is a person of indian origins very old
diaspora from india.

romani genetic study
http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0960982212012602

i also did a commercial genetic test with 23andme and i could trace my
genetics back to india. it says 14% southasian but thats not really
accurate i think, because peer reviewed studies from scientists show
romani to be more indian, it is complexed topic on genetics and
indians themselfes descendt of different genetic components but it is
a starting point that i trace my roots to india, im 56.25% romani
voivodina and 37.5% ethnic serbian and 6.25% russian. my family is
dark skinned and southasian looking, i myself have somewhat darker
skin and dark hair and eyes and partially southasian features, i was
often asked if im from pakistan. i also was relative of most roma and
part roma who tested with 23andme so i can proove that im authentic
romani and romanis are a diaspora from india like proven with
anthropological, linguistic and genetic evidence.

i attach my picture, and my genetic results. can you tell me if im
eligible for overseas indian status or if that is not true for
romanis, does india recognise romanis as indian diaspora.

im curious about the information. i dont want indian citizenship
because austria allows only 1 citizenship not dual and i would loose
my austrian citizenship but it would be nice if i could travell visa
free to india.

thanks for information, regards.

It's interestin to know the position of Indian governement about romani. I guess, they don't really have position as romani is a far away small community who don't really keep link to the country.

Do you support, the move of romani from Europe to India?

No because NZ is such a small country, granted it is a first world, country and does receive its fair share of tourism and such, but it is basically much easier to get things across in NZ. It is also much easier to start a business than in most other countries, there is very little red tape. It is one of the things I like about NZ.

Yes, it was far easier setting up on arrival in NZ than it was just returning to the UK. Much less bureaucracy and fewer rules.
