View Full Version : What genetic testing company would work best for my ancestry?

Given what I know about my own ancestry already, there are only a few things I would like to find out through being tested:
-My ratio of Germanic to Celtic ancestry
-My ratio of English to Scottish/Welsh/maybe even Irish ancestry
-Any potential Scandinavian admixture (via Vikings)
-Any potential Arab (via Sicily), Native American (if the family lore is correct), or even SSA or Jewish admixture
I've heard that 23andme, in particular, is not at all thorough when it comes to differentiating British ancestry. Are there any genetic testing services which would really be successful at discerning all of this?

Companies with thorough classification of the different populations of Britain? Anyone?

If you tested a full Sicilian relative I would be able to analyze their results in thorough detail, but if you tell me which part of the island they are from, I can send you results from the same region that might give an indication as to your family background there.. because people from the same region all tend to be of similar ancestry, rather than so much individual variation.
As for Amerindian or African via the US, that would be best captured on 23andme.

Such ancestry can't be successfully measured, because those groups are relatively close to each other.
-Any potential Arab (via Sicily), Native American (if the family lore is correct), or even SSA or Jewish admixture
That's possible to be measured but of course, in comparison to the set of average result from certain countries. Every population is for some % Arab but only significantly higher or lower than average result may indicate something. The same thing is with other admixtures mentioned.

If you only want to have autosomal genetics tested and ignore their low resolution of y-chrosomomal test, order 23andme and upload your results on Gedmatch. On this site, you will have an access to many ancestry calculators.

Thanks! This was quite helpful.

Alright, here's another thing: how would 23andme compare to AncestryDNA? Would either work equally as well in this case? Would there be some advantage to either?
