TALKING too long on your phone gives you brain tumours, deodorants give you breast cancer, reusing plastic water bottles releases cancer-causing chemicals. We've all heard the rumours, but should we take them seriously?

Cancer myths and controversies can take many forms - Chinese whisper-style rumours, mass email hoaxes that cause panic as they are sent around the globe, or even as news headlines.

As Cancer Research UK's health and science web manager, Henry Scowcroft, explains: "There's a bewildering amount of noise about cancer, some of it based on sound science, some of it widely misunderstood."
