View Full Version : Your favourite pizza toppings

What are some of your favourite pizza toppings? I'm usually pretty boring: I like pepperoni, mushrooms, bacon and olives. But I can go for almost anything else really. :) :pizza:

(Yeah, guess what I'm having for supper tonight :P)

I can't think of anything that's usually used as topping for pizza that I don't like, except maybe pineapple, but I can tolerate even that.

Some combinations I particularly like are:

- Anchovies, egg, capers (salami optional). I think this is what's sometimes called a napolitana.

- Chicken, bacon, barbeque sauce, red onion.

- Pepperoni, mushroom, blue cheese. Sometimes I add tuna fish to this, call me a Philistine if you will.

- And, of course, Quattro Formaggi.

Pepperoni and green olives are my favorite

Sausage, black olives, and mushrooms are cool too

Extra cheese and stuffed crust are always great as well

Vegetables do not belong on pizza

Mussels and shrimps.

Crayfish tails and white asparagus. (With dashes of cold, yoghurt-based curry-sauce added after baking if you wish.)

Smoked ham and mushrooms.

Sardines and capers.

Pesto and fresh tomatoes.

Gorgonzola.

4 kinds of cheese.

Things that don't go well on a pizza, in my opinion: Tuna, chicken ... no good.

So what do you eat at 3 am when you're shit-faced drunk and trying do to sober up from all the alcohol you've drunk?????????
Nothing or milk and fruits or only fruits until evening. It helps my body to recover faster and to clean the poisons;)
It may be hard in the beginning, however after some time your body just got used with your regime and you don't even think of foods like pizzas, hamburgers, etc.

In Brazil, they have "family size" pizzas that the size and the thickness of a tractor's front tire. The list of available toppings beggars belief: besides all the "standard" toppings, they have all types of tropical fruit and animal flesh. In Brazil they also sometimes put peas and carrot on pizza.

This is quite far from my idea of pizza, and I'm not a huge fan of big and thick pizza, also strange animal flash and tropical fruits would make me puke but hell yeah, if they like it, is ok.

Red Florentine pizza. Meatballs, mushrooms, black olives, and spinach. There is also a white Florentine pizza in which a garlic and olive oil sauce is substituted for the tomato sauce. Not bad, but I don't like it quite as well as the red Florentine pizza. NOTE : The spinach is NOT a garnish. It is an ingredient of the topping and should be at least as abundant as any of the other ingredients.

Spinach, black olives, mushrooms, sausage, and meatballs. This is known at the Olympic Pizza Restraurant as a Florentine pizza, available either red or white. I prefer the red [marinara] sauce. The white sauce contains too much garlic which hides the flavors of the other ingredients.

Aaah yes, I remember this story quite well, the guide in Rome told us when we were visitng some Savoia's tomb (I think it was in the Pantheon if my memory serves me corectly).

As for me, I like my pizza to be very spicy and peppered, therefore chilli peppers are my favuorite topping.

Yeah I've heard this story before!

So I had my pizza...but to be honest, I make better pizza's than most of the pizzeria's here. :D

Yes, in the Pantheon there are some sabaudian tombs, even if most part of Maison Savoie is buried here (Torino, which was the capital of sabaudian states for 500 years) or in their ancestral homeland, Chambery (that is part of France since 1860).

This isn't surprising considering that outside Italy is very rare to find a decent pizza (at least from my perspective).
Btw, you will be the favourite wife/girlfriend for many of us italics, if you're able to cook pizzas :p

I guess there is; in the end the original form of both means bread or pie (from Greek píta), if I'm not mistaken. Ultimately coming from the Aramaic word for bread (according to Wiktionary (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/pide)).

Alot of people don't always realize, but 2/3rds of what is pizza have been made among many civilizations of the near east and med. region for thousands of years:

There is no specifically American pizza. You can get just about any toppings
you want to pay for in this country. In some pizzerias, the complexity of your pizza is limited only by your imagination and your pocketbook.

There are those who claim that the tomato-&-cheese pizza was invented either in New Jersey or in NYC and subsequently imported into Italy. I will say that, when I was in Italy in 1954, I did not encounter pizza as a tomato-&-cheese pie with various toppings in Genova, Livorno, Pisa, Firenze, Roma,
Taranto, and Palermo,Sicilia.

In fact, the only place in southern Europe where I found this type of pizza was in a small pizzeria on the Rue Canebiere in Marseilles. This pizzeria was operated by an elderly Italian-American from Brooklyn, NY. Perhaps, then, the popular form of pizza IS American in origin and WAS imported into Italy and southern Europe .

If America "ruined" the native cuisine, why is it so overwhelmingly popular ?

Yes Italian cuisine over in Italy seems to still be regionalistic till this day. For instance, I know of no place on the mainland where one can get a canoli. I believe one still has to go mostly to Sicily for that. Also, panzanella you mostly still have to go to Florence for.

Pizza is usually square in Rome and rather different the Neopolitan style.

In the big northern cities is very easy to find sicilian cousine/restaurants, because of the internal massive '50-'60 migration (here in Torino southern italians are 60-65% of the population, for example) that literally erased northern italians from some northern zones, and also in Rome is easy to find products from all the Peninsula/Islands...but yes, pizzas are very different by each regions.

In last years here in Piemont, due to the massive muslim immigration, the Doner kebab pizza is spreading rapidly.

From my experience, the quality of a doner-kebab depends by the ethnicity who make it: turks or egyptians cook the best doner, while moroccans and tunisians not, is quite disgusting.

I LOVED Italy. The Italians were the friendliest people I encountered in the whole Mediterranean area. And the FOOD.......I told a shipmate of mine "If I lived here I'd weigh 300 pounds. Of course, I'd probably die young, but I'd die happy."

I have wonderful memories of Italy, such as riding up to the top of Monte Vomero in a taxi with my friend "T-Mac" Long and singing the entire first act of Aida, all parts, soprano and mezzo roles in falsetto, while the driver was laughing so hard he could hardly drive.

Or, having Filetto di bue Voronoff at the Ristorante Olimpo (al capurro del
grattacielo [there was only one]) in Genova. I'd had it before and knew that when the brandy is poured over it just before serving and lighted, it explodes.

The Admiral, dining at the next table didn't know this and was watching with interest as the dish was prepared at my table. When the brandy exploded, he jumped up out of his chair. I had the devil's own time keeping a straight face. It would not be prudent of an Ensign to laugh at the Admiral's discomfiture.

I don't think that "la dolce vita" was a myth. There seemed to be an overall air of joy everywhere that I visited in Italy. I think that it really was a good time to be alive in Italy.

I'm very happy to know that you loved the ''old version of us''...i wish i'd the possibility to see our countries in those years, now it a total shithole...in Genova there aren't no more ligurian fishermans, but southern american drug cartels...and the most visited restaurant in Vomero (Napoli) is the Mc Donald...

did you visited northern Italy?
Cities like Torino, Milano or Verona were jewels before massive southern italian immigration (and the consequent urbanistical expansions) and the industrializations of the '60s.

These tidings make me so sad. Alas that the Italy which I knew and loved is no more. A friend of mine who has recently visited Firenze tells me that even that jewel of a city has been "modernised." Fortunately, all of the old sites which I visited are still there, though overshadowed by glass boxes, nondescript grattacieli.

Genova was our farthest north port of call. I have been able to sample northern Italian cuisine at a restaurant the father of whose owner came from Abruzzo . I never cared for pasta e fagioli because I knew only the Neapolitan version. His pasta e fagioli is delicious, it shows that some dishes are far better without tomato.

So, I have never been to Liguria, never seen Torino or Milano, which I very much desire to see. I never shall because I do not fly except as the result of dire necessity. Oh well, at least I have my memories of the Italy that was.

Torino and Milano were jewels before 1965-1970...Torino was called ''the Paris of Italy'' in all the anglosaxon world...now is still good (the old part), but massive urban expansion ruined these lands...and also massive immigration.
Firenze is something like 20% asian now...and dirty, very dirty in the streets...but still a good city to visit (not to live, however).
