American artist Paul McCarthy has decided to withdraw a giant inflatable installation from Paris’s Place Vendôme after vandals attacked the piece, outraged at its resemblance to an anal plug
McCarthy, 69, was slapped three times Thursday by an outraged passer-by when he erected his sculpture, called “Tree”, next to a column topped by a statue of Napoleon in the famous Paris square.
The installation caused a storm of mirth in the French media over its obvious resemblance to a sex toy, while conservative group Printemps Français (French Spring) was outraged at “Paris’s humiliation”.
