"Premier Victor Ponta on Saturday said in Curtea de Arges that if he is elected President he will refer the issue of the form of government to public debate; he didn't rule out the possibility to even call a referendum on the subject.

"If I make to President, I will be that President to raise for public debate the subject of the form of government, it would be the first time that it would be done seriously, and if there is a public movement on this cause, we might even have a referendum on the subject. I think we put behind the '90s, when we feared the King was coming to seize our country. I believe there is already a serious debate going on in the Romanian society and after we rid ourselves of all this sterile political dispute, the person who takes over as Romania's President needs to prompt a serious debate to channel the public opinion on the form of government," Victor Ponta said. Wow! Is it possible that he is serious, or this is just a meaningless campaign speech?

The form of government is the least of Romania's concerns and there is no debate on the issue in the romanian society. The only rationale behind this statement is that he wants the vote of royalists which he wont get because royalists are educated middle and upper class people (and that's Johannis' electorate).

The gypsy mongolian can fuck right off.

Thanks. I find it funny that a socialist talks about going back to monarchy, but it seems in Romanian politics anything goes.

Eventually it will comes down to national referendum. Republic or Constitutional Monarchy. Personally I'm for C.M. but it seems that I found myself in a optimistic minority How much longer ? Well, it depends on how fast the so called "new bourgeoisie"mainly derivative from the deceased PCR (Romanian Communist Party) will fail. The quarter century cycle that Romania just passed through since the fall of communism will bring hopefully something better.

What's the point of switching to C.M. ? To me it seems like nothing more than silly nostalgia for the romantic interwar period. Will the governing of the country improve as a result of this change ? Does the country need to support a couple of dinosaurs who contribute very little if anything at all?
As a royalist you're probably aware of the succession issue in the Hohenzollern family. Who needs all this?

Is there really a large enough support base behind restoring Mihai I or having his daughter rule? They're not exactly uber-Vlach. They're from the German Imperial family, after all.

If the family were to be restored his daugther wouldn't rule as the old constitution of Romania states that only a male can succeed. The future king would be the head of the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen family which at this moment is this guy

Why should we support this?
