View Full Version : How important is 23andme (and its findings) in determining your origin/ethnicity?

Say you possess 100% or thereabouts European DNA on 23andme, plot in the same area as people in your country of origin DNA wise, and possess the dominant Y-DNA haplogroup of the majority in your country, does this in itself fully confirm you as of their ethnicity? Or are other factors (phenotype) more important? Have there been any cases where the phenotype and genetic plotting somewhat or fully contradict the 23andme findings?

Yes if you have that phenotype should come along with it. The bold part is a very good way to determine ethnicity in my opinion.

What's the main Y- haplogroup in Black Marsh?

Let's say that your phenotype is similar to most Mulattos and you come out straight 100 % European then I'd say ''Roger there's a problem'' but phenotype represents only a fraction of your genotype so I'd say this is true to a certain extend and not like some people believe it to be. I have yet to see one Afram, East Asian or North African that plots near any European.

Sometimes phenotype doesn't match genotype

Sometimes phenotype doesn't match genotype

Are there explanations for this? Surely the phenotype should match the Y and MtDNA haplogroups? Or is it a case of genetic plotting outliers?

Allow me to explain to your thin narrow head. An example of someone having a phenotype typical of the Balkans but plots in say Iberia. Ever happened/possible? I'm new here.

could be important for adopted people or new worlders with suspect origins etc. like to prove if they really have a cherokee princess down their line etc. or to prove something, but for me it is not important i am what i always knew that i am. look at my signature, so it proves nothing new. i guess for most people who know their origins it is nothing new and if it is big surprise then something is wrong, maybe the results are wrong or your mum didnt told you who your dad is or you were switched with someone else at birth etc. but i would first investigate if the results are true. also for population research peer reviewed studies are better then 23andme, 23andme is commercial for individual purposes etc.

I knew where I was from and my heritage before taking any tests. I really took the test for deep ancestry. I've had myself and 3 family members tested. I've also had my brother tested at FTDNA and will have myself tested. We are so British Isles it's boring. My brother on FTDNA has come back 100% British Isles and on 23andme is 96.5% British Isles and the rest broadly Northern European. He also has a very Irish y-dna and is M222. We've obviously been in Ireland for a very long time.

Genotype is much more than just the Y chromosome.

Genes responsible for looks are only a small part of the genes that make up your genetic profile that allows to determine your ethnic origin. That is why someone may look like he belongs to an X ethnicity while genetic profile may indicate entirely different roots.
