Very common, but I actually have no genetic tie to it.

Edit: I should also mention, my first, middle, and last names are all technically surnames, but I was talking only about my last name.

Aviator

Why don't you change it to a uber Scandinavian one?

I think it's silly to change one's name for the sake of changing one's name.

That said, because I'm traditionalist in many ways, if I end up marrying a girl in Scandinavia, I may consider taking her last name to help completely integrate myself.

Which is ironic, seeing as that's also the opposite of what is traditional, and may even seem like the most feminist thing to do.

Where I am it's not common or uncommon.

My surname is 'Jacks', it's of English origin, going back to the Norman conquest, from the French name 'Jacques' which was brought by them to England. I reckon it's pretty rare, at least rarer than the more common form of 'Jackson'. That said, my English part of the family is from Sussex, but I also have family from Germany (mainly Prussia which isn't German anymore) and Poland (again, mainly from Prussia).

My surname is probably unique and one of a kind as my parents claim. I won't reveal it, and I don't even use it fully unless I need to because it's a bit long and sounds kinda weird as it consists of two different words. Normally, the former one could be a middle name, but I'm forced to specify that it's included in my surname while talking to an operator and such. Though I'm proud it's Turkic, not Arabic, Armenian or Persian-influenced.

Mine is Galician.. veeeery common surname in some countries.

According to forebears.co.uk, it appears to be more common in Portugal (Top 50), Brazil and Cuba/Puerto Rico, followed by Argentina/Chile/Uruguay (not in the Top 100 in any of the countries from the Southern Cone though).

It doesn't even make it to the Top 200 in Mexico, Peru, Spain, Central American countries, etc.

Weirdly enough it is more common in Switzerland than in Spain haha.

Mine is not very common, but is not extremely uncommon either. I have met, however, good numbers of people on the Internet, with my same surname in Italy, in Venezuela (many of them known relatives of mine), in US, in Brazil, and in Argentina.

However, I would say there are more people with my surname in Brazil and Argentina than in my own native country :eek3:

My second (maternal) surname, from my Mallorcan mom, is very very uncommon.

My surname is very common in Austria. The Austrian authorities changed the family-name of my family, when the district had been added to Austrian Empire more than 200 years ago.

The Bavarian name of my family had been "Adlmanninger" - very rare in Austria - according to baptist register.

The complete name had been: "Georgen-Bauer zu Adlmanning" The Austrians decided that "Bauer" is good enough.

For me:

Distribution:
https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/832x615q90/921/qf0Tjt.png

Etymology:
"Level
Surtout porté dans le Pas-de-Calais, semble un sobriquet lié au veau (voir Leveau), le mot s'étant prononcé et écrit "vel, veel" en ancien français."

English:
"Level
Focused in the Pas-de-Calais, seems a nickname related to calf (see Leveau), the word being pronounced and written "vel, veel" in Old French. "

Paternal grandmother (North of France origin):

Distribution:

Etymology:
"Étymologie

Tourtois
"Apparemment originaire du Pas-de-Calais, le nom est très présent à Billy-Montigny dès le XVIe siècle. Sens incertain. Le dictionnaire de M.-T. Morlet propose une sorte de gâteau (dérivé de "tourte"), mais on ne trouve aucune attestation d'un tel mot. Je pencherais plutôt pour une variante du mot "tordoir", également écrit "tortoir", qui a désigné un pressoir, et qui est à l'origine du nom de famille Tordois, porté dans le Nord."

English:
"Apparently original of Pas-de-Calais, the name is very much in Billy-Montigny in the sixteenth century. meaning uncertain. The dictionary M.-T. Morlet offers a kind of cake (derived from "pie"), but we find no proof of such a word. I would rather for variations of the word "twister" also wrote "tortoir ', which designated a press, and that is the origin of the family name Tordois, carried in the North.")

My maternal grandmother (Spanish and Flemish origin):

Distribution:
https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/884x570q90/922/e2YviS.png

Etymology:
"Venderotte

English:
"Venderotte
Worn in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais, should be a graphic variant Vanderotte (rare and previously worn in Belgium), one of many Dutch names starting with "van". Difficult to say more, there should be other alternatives to decide on the meaning of the last part. "

It's extremely rare, it's a double barrelled family name made up of one classic yet uncommon surname, and another which by itself is already very rare. Whilst both of the paternal lines that compose that name can be traced back centuries, only my close family members have it double barrelled, and for these reasons I'm fiercely protective of our name.
