The Endless City Skyscraper

An Organic skyscraper proposal named The Endless City in Height designed by SURE Architecture wins the first prize in London Organic Skyscraper competition.

The City in height is an alternative to the usual design of skyscrapers. Rather than superimposing one floor on top of another without real continuity; our project is thought as two endless ramps circumrotating continually and rising gradually with a low gradient from the ground floor to the sky. London’s streets can now be developed both horizontally and vertically in a continuous way.

There is no break anymore, neither between the streets level and the skyscraper, nor between the skyscraper floors themselves. The goal of the design is to conceive an open building that is effective as an inviting and yet powerful symbol in all directions while being permeated by generosity and openness.

The different programs of the Tech City are settled continuously along the two ramps. They face each other, and are linked with bridges, interweave mutually in a dynamic vertical and horizontal movement to increase exchanges, communications and interactions. The differentiated but interconnected spatial sequences of public spaces and, entertainment spaces create a lively, discussion-rich setting for conversations, and societal inter-action and at the same time permit the creation of the vertical city.

Movement, views and relations in the site manifest themselves clearly as essential parameters to develop the architectural production. The entrance into the building is characterized by continuous spatial concentration and directed visual relations. Spatial development and materiality define the path that leads from the public area into the heart of the building.

The irregular ramps way create a variety of space and atmosphere. People discover the Tech City when they walk up the slopes through commercial and vibrating streets, innovative and technologic spaces, huge parks or public places which communicate with auditorium, inside or outside areas, dynamic exchange places or intimate quiet areas. A mix complex and rich system like a real city.

This vertical city comprises of various plazas with individual character to create high pedestrian movement throughout the tower. From the most public to the most private of spaces, the area allows for a spectacular view of the building.
Movement, spaces and light manifest themselves clearly as important and essential players in the overall production; providing the visitor a visually exciting environment, and a transition to the future.

People said the same about the Skylon and Virgin Galactic. Maybe Sir Richard Branson or Sir Alan Sugar should fund it.

Vertical gardens ?

Well, public sky gardens will open next year inside the Walkie Talkie skyscraper at 20 Fenchurch St. in the City of London, after the skyscraper construction was completed in Spring this year, (an example of how it should look is in the video below), and a floating garden was shown at the Chelsea Flower Show a few years ago in London, so the sky's the limit...

It's an excellent concept for Cities.

In Portugal vertical Gardens have been exported since 2002 or something.

I agree. Londoner's love roof-top gardens a lot, especially the Kensington Roof Gardens which was funded by Sir Richard Branson, so I think it's beautiful that more sky-gardens are proposed.

I always thought London was not fit for skyscrapers. The city has a very organic structure and they all look out of place.

With the lack of space for Houses, where are they going to find space for Gardens? It's the only solution.

I admire that Men.

London is a delightful mixture of the old and the new when it comes to architecture.

Yes it's a practical solution. London has a lot of great parks and lots of new trees have been planted, but balconies and roof-top gardens saves space for gardens on top of stores like Harvey Nichols, etc, and also it's a nice way to view over cities. There's also seasonal open-air rooftop cinemas, roof-top ice-skating rinks (over the London Aquarium) and quite a number of rooftop restaurants and bars, and even a rooftop cinema with sauna baths in London. I think people like to experiment with new ideas, like with the boating lake and mini-golf which was on top of the Selfridges department store on Oxford St during the London Olympics. The cable cars over the River Thames by the Millennium Dome and the BT Zip Wire idea which was tried out in Victoria Park are great ideas too and saves congestion at both ground-level and on the congested public tube transport deep beneath the city.

It's a depressing article and worrying. Security is tight on the London Eye wheel, so I guess tight-security will be essential with these types of new ambitious projects too. I try to focus on the positive aspects in our country, but I'm aware of the negative side too and terror attacks is also a concern, (reminiscent of grey clouds and overcast looming around any glimpse of sunshine), and exacerbated further by ISIS supporters. :( I think voting for UKIP is a glimmer of hope as a solution in dealing with this situation of ISIS terrorism supporters.

The concept is amazing and if it was built it would be a symbol of Anglo engineering prowess which would mark the 2010s, as much as the Dubai's landmarks marked the 2000s.
