Over 10,000 Romanians took to the streets of Bucharest to celebrate the initial results of the second round of the presidential elections on Sunday, which put Klaus Iohannis in the lead ahead of current prime minister Victor Ponta. Iohannis, Christian Liberal Alliance candidate and ethnic German, reportedly scored 55% in exit polls, defeating Social Democrat Ponta, who only gathered around 44% of the votes.

Crowds gathered at the University square and the Foreign Office and attempted to march on the defeated Social Democratic Party HQ where some protesters tried to force through a police barricade after attacking campaign posters of Ponta. Klaus Iohannis later greeted the crowd, who chanted and waved large Romanian flags.

Ponta conceded defeat and congratulated Romania's first president from a German background, Klaus Iohannis. The handover of power is scheduled to take place on December 21, after the Constitutional Court validates the results of the polls.

Congrats! He seems to be the reasonable choice as president.

Congrats! He seems to be the reasonable choice as president.
Yes he seems, now he has to prove that he actually is.

A German president, eh? Romania will make a fine addition to the Greater Germanic Reich.
