The European Union flag became the subject of an unscheduled debate last week, after an MP replaced an EU standard that had been brought into the chamber and removed over the previous weekend.
According to a report on Index.hu (http://index.hu/belfold/2014/11/11/nem_turik_az_eu-s_zaszlot_a_parlament_ulestermeben/), Deputy House Speaker János Latorczai (Fidesz-KDNP) expressed his disapproval when Socialist Anita Heringes placed the flag of the European Union next to the Hungarian flag before Tuesday’s plenary session, replacing the one she had brought in earlier.
Latorczai told Heringes that in his opinion EU flag did not belong there, as “Parliament has a unified image,” and then asked “what would happen if the representatives of each ethnic minority would bring their flags in the chamber?”
For her part, Heringes said that she brought the flag into the chamber because every member of Parliament is both a Hungarian and an EU citizen, and the flag of the Union represents them all.
The status of the EU flag at the Hungarian parliament became an issue last year, when it was removed from its place on the outside of the building to make way for the flag of the ethnic Hungarian Szekely/Szekler community in Romania’s Transylvania region.
