Vienna’s religious landscape is changing - with a decline in the number of Catholics and Christians and an increase in the number of Muslims due to immigration and secularization.

A study by the Vienna-based WIREL project showed that in 30 years time only one third of the capital will be Catholic and the proportion of Muslims will almost double to 21 percent.

Researchers estimate that Vienna is currently around 41 percent Catholic, four percent Protestant, nine percent Orthodox (mainly Serbian), 12 percent Muslim and 0.5 percent Jewish. Three percent are other religions and 30 percent are atheist or agnostic.

Ramon Bauer from the WIREL project said that since the 1970s Viennese people have been leaving the Catholic church and increased migration has contributed to an increase in Orthodox Christians and Muslims.

“The trend is towards the privatization and individualization of religion,” Bauer said. He added that Vienna’s diverse religions is not typical of the rest of Austria’s states, where the Catholic church still plays a leading role.

One reason why the number of Muslims and Orthodox Christians is expected to rise in future is that they are seen as relatively “young” religions - with Muslim youth the most religious of their age group. The population of Orthodox Christians is expected to grow from nine to 11 percent.

The population of Catholics is predicted to sink to 33 percent.

“Future birth rates will play a role in the expansion of religions and religion tends to be inherited,” Bauer said. Muslim and Jewish women tend on average to have more children, he added.

He said there is also a trend towards interfaith partnerships in Vienna although religion will often play a less significant role and interfaith families tend to have less children.

150 refugees to arrive in Klosterneuburg

The small town of Klosterneuburg in Lower Austria is preparing to receive between 100 and 150 refugees, mainly from Syria.

They will be housed in the Magdeburg barracks for six months and mayor Stefan Schmuckenschlager (ÖVP) has said he is taking local residents’ concerns about safety seriously.

“I’m prepared to employ extra security if it’s considered necessary for residents and local businesses,” he said.

The first refugees are expected to start arriving in the next few days and Schmuckenschlager anticipates that they will all be settled into their accommodation before Christmas. There is space for around 30 families, or a maximum 150 people.

Klosterneuburg local Sabine Gösker has founded a Facebook group called Klosterneuburg hilft and is calling on others who wish to volunteer their time and help to join.

In particular she is looking for donations of books - particularly German language textbooks as well as any books in Aramaic, Arabic, Turkish or Kurdish.

She said that she set up the group in response to a “vocal and negative” backlash against the idea of a refugee centre in Klosterneuburg. She said that the refugees will need locals’ help as they will be struggling to live with a lack of privacy, will be totally dependent on the kindness of strangers, and will have no meaningful employment.

The mayor’s office is also requesting those who wish to volunteer to provide their names and contact details, and an idea of what they could contribute.

Expensive real estate

Klosterneuburg boasts some of Lower Austria's most expensive and exclusive apartments. It is reported that the city’s most expensive property is listed at €1,995,800 with around 525 square meters.

Sources say that many Russian millionaires are now looking to Klosterneuburg for their real estate investments. Even the FPÖ leader Heinz-Christian Strache rents part of a villa there.

It is within commuting distance of Vienna and has a population of 25,918. It is most famous for its 12th century monastery, and the excellent wines grown in the region's vineyards.

Fitting. The "right wing" mainstream party is all about this. Serves those people right for electing and ÖVP mayor.

Hopefully they're kicked out before it's too late.

Well, the main problem in this case is religion (and culture). Ex-Yugoslavs (Serbians, Croats and Bosniaks) are Europeans, they are not mulattos, Asians or indomestizos. Turks are Caucasians as well (read the thread "White Turks", there is a lot of pictures there), some (about a third or so) pass as southern Euros. Although I don't view Turkish people collectively as white.
