Great Teacher Onizuka - A series about Japan's maddest and baddest
teacher with the class from hell. Possibly the funniest anime I've yet seen.

http://mangapowa.m.a.pic.centerblog.net/9c8bqotr.jpg

Black Lagoon - Enjoyably violent and amoral, great stuff.

Initial D - Great series about a young up-and-coming streetracer.

Yes of course Full Metal Alchemist and Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood(which is almost done), both are very different and complement each other. They are also both great, so watch them. The first series has better music and character development, Brotherhood has a better overall story and pacing though.

- Darker than Black(both seasons)

i3Ul12nBFlc

They have just recently dubbed the first season. One of the better dubs I've heard, if the trailer is representative.
MHJjr9HpIQw

Elfen Lied(I was just remembering it yesterday)

3RLN42dWLsY

Another good, similarly styled one would be Claymore, although the last episodes are horrible including the ending. :(

DDZYTMTgvSI

I could name tons more, although some genres and specific titles are really difficult to get into, and fall within a certain niche.

Robotech is worth a mention because Anime started going mainstream with Western audiences when this was released in the 1980's. It was all the rage when I was a kid in South Africa.

It's a somewhat confusing edit of 3 unrelated Japanese animes (Macross, Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospeada) into one series done by Harmony Gold, the producer who was responsible for adapting / translating it.

http://www.fpsmagazine.com/blog/uploaded_images/RobotechRM7-725908.jpg

The only Robotech story arc that I liked, and still like, is the first one (aka Macross in Japan). I loved Captain Gloval and Roy Fokker, two very memorable characters that I enjoyed a great deal and whose deaths were something I'd never before seen in a cartoon.

http://www.thatanimeblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/vlcsnap-2009-12-08-20h40m41s255.jpg

He was always smoking his pike. :)

(Ensign Porter has caught Captain Gloval trying to light his pipe on the bridge of the SDF-1 Macross)
Ensign Porter: "Captain, there's no smoking on the bridge!"
Captain Gloval: (puts away the match) "Oh, of course not, Sammy. I was just holding it."

And since Captain Gloval was Russian, you'd hear a "bozhe moy" every so often.

Forest Gump?

It made me cry...Yes, it is a great film, but I cannot be sure. You see, I have "Forrest Gump" and can watch it again and again: there will be no wonder if it stays in my memory for a long time.

An example can be "Europa, Europa" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zt7u0DTWCg). For several years I wanted to know what the title of the film was and to watch it again (until I luckily found its description in a program of a Polish TV channel).

But let's not leave the track. This thread is about anime. :)

I've been watching anime for at least 20 years, back when I first saw Hardmagedon on VHS around 1990. If you count watching Voltron (aka Beast King GoLion) on TV around 1985, then it's a lot longer. I've seen some really good anime and some really shitty anime. Anime was a novelty in the late 80s and early 90s, and I think it caught on in the U.S. sooner than it did in Europe, being filtered in from the West Coast to the rest of the country.

To continue, some of my favorites are:

Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tenchi_Muyo!_Ryo-Ohki (I've only seen the first half of this, from the early 90s, and not the finale from 2005)

They Were Eleven: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/They_Were_Eleven

Gunsmith Cats: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gunsmith_Cats#Anime (Based on a successful manga by Sonada Kenichi, the creator of the *original* Bubblegum Crisis from the late 1980s)

Battle Angel: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_Angel_OVA (Based on what I regard as the finest manga series of all time)

Ping-Pong Club: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ping_Pong_Club (Funny in a fucked-up and weird sort of way)

A few that I enjoy watching and have been rather influential in my artistic interests:

1. Armored Trooper VOTOMS, rough animation as it's from the early 80's but it still remains my all time favorite.

2. Mobile Suit Gundam, the U.C. timeline is my preferred. The 08th MS Team is an OVA of this timeline that I highly recommend.

3. Macross and downstream Macross stories, definitely preferred to the Americanized compilation Robotech, contains the original unaltered storyline without the incorporation of unrelated anime into the series.

4. Fooly Cooly, hilarious OVA.

5. Jyu-Oh-Sei

6. Trigun, an absolute must see.

My favorite anime movie would have to be Ninja Scroll. Ghost in the Shell would be second and I can't think of a close third. I haven't really seen that many anime movies, though.

My favorite manga and anime series is Berserk, and I would recommend it to anyone that can stomach slaughter, rape, gore and other things of that nature. I've actually been working on an AMV for the anime series, particularly the end of it. Below is a link to the latest version. I would upload it to YouTube, but it would probably get deleted due to the content.

WARNING! DO NOT CLICK ON THIS LINK IF YOU CANNOT HANDLE SEEING AN ANIMATED CHARACTER AT HIS LOWEST POINT SACRIFICE HIS COMRADES TO BECOME A DEMON KING AND THEN PROCEED TO RAPE HIS BEST FRIEND'S WOMAN IN FRONT OF HIM TO INDUSTIRAL METAL! THIS IS NOT FOR EVERYONE! (http://www.mediafire.com/?aj4i62m3w36o1zu)

Check it out if you are interested and let me know what you think. It's still in the works, so suggestions are welcome. I know that the "Movavi Trial..." message that keeps flashing is annoying, but it shows up because I converted my .ogm files to .avi files for DVD burning purposes with a free conversion program. I will try and use the original footage if I ever finish the video to avoid that nuissance.

Rochefaton
07-28-2011, 02:30 AM
After checking the options at YouTube, it seems it is possible to upload a video that can only be viewed by link. Sweetness. I went ahead and uploaded the Berserk AMV I mentioned in my previous post, so here it is.

AND AS A REMINDER, this video contains nudity, gore, industrial metal, etc. If those things repulse you, then do not watch.

Strangely, the image for my first suggestion is gone. The suggested anime was Elfen Lied, for anyone getting to the party late:

However, I also recommend a couple other decent pieces:

Utawarerumono actually began it's life as an H-game, but I thought it was rather tastefully adapted into this anime. Warning: filler ending.

http://images.pricerunner.com/product/image/50114664/Ergo-Proxy-Collection-%5BDVD%5D-%5B2009%5D.jpg
Ergo Proxy is just a spectacular post-apocalyptic cyberpunk anime, but because of the amount of Western philosophical imput, it does tend to be something of a, for lack of a better word, mindf***.

I seriously can't believe no one posted Ghost in the Shell. I enjoy all the GitS variations, but the series was a particular favourite of mine.

I have to admit, for as obscene as the series can sometimes be (what do you expect? The artists started out drawing hentai manga), I enjoy Hellsing. I thought the OVA has been particularly well-done, and ranks among one of my most embarassing guilty pleasures (the other being High School of the Dead). We'll see how the latest additions do (I haven't seen VIII, IX, or X).
