In 1913 Estonian Natonial Museum in Tartu sent a photographer Johannes Pääsuke to photograph rural life and people of Saaremaa island, West-Estonia.
What did he see there?

Thanks for posting. I've always been fascinated by Saaremaa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saaremaa), although believe it or not for one reason or the other I have yet to visit.

Yes, Saaremaa is a very interesting Island for many reasons. I will try to find the time to visit during summer, I know some dudes who go wind surfing there pretty much every year.

Now a question... Do these islanders look like Nordic Vikings or Russian peasants? :P

They look like Estonians.
They look like Estonians.
Come on, be honest Karl! They look like a herd of Rasputins out in the fields!

Beards were popular back then :)

In Russia... :P
Beards of that magnitude were not typical of Northern Europe. But in the East, slightly more. They even had to allow them to carry the beards in the army... a Europe-wide exception.

So we come to a conclusion that Estonians looked more like Nordic Vikings then the Scandinavians. :p
And Rasputin's Nordic too ;>

I didn't know being a Viking was tied to specific phenotype.

You're correct. Now try to convince Jarl that all Vikings weren't 2 meters tall Hallstat Nordids.
Vikings had all Northern European phenotypes, Baltid, Nordid, Borreby etc.

I somehow doubt Ketil Flatnose was a Hallstatt Nordid. :D
Most of the 'Viking' era skulls I have seen reconstructed were more in the Cro-Magnid/Falid/Baltid range than Hallstatt Nordid.

Specifically, people in these photos are very similar to the Russian peasants. Beard, clothes, houses, etc.
