Government Endorses Building of Two New Nuclear Reactors

Government endorsed the construction of two new nuclear reactors on Wednesday evening. The proposal grants licences to the energy firms Fennovoima and Teollisuuden Voima (TVO). The plan was presented by Minister of Economic Affairs Mauri Pekkarinen.

According to Jyrki Katainen, Finance Minister and chair of the conservative National Coalition Party, two new reactors will make Finland completely self-sufficient in electricity production.

However, Minister of Labour and Green League* Chair Anni Sinnemäki expressed disappointment in the proposal. She said that Finland should depend on renewable energy sources, for example. Sinnemäki added that nuclear technology is precarious and risky, and therefore other sources should be considered.

Parliament is to make the final decision on construction, most likely next autumn.

The Fennovoima nuclear reactor would be built in either Pyhäjoki or Simo, both on the northern part of the west coast. A decision is expected by the end of the year. Officials are still trying to determine where to dispose nuclear waste. German energy company E.ON owns about a third of Fennovoima. Other owners include Atria, Kesko, Outokumpu and SOK, as well as local energy companies.

TVO plans to build its nuclear reactor at Olkiluoto where the company’s third nuclear reactor is currently being built. The reactor, which will be Finland's fifth, is far behind schedule. TVO owners include Pohjolan Voima and Fortum.

The majority-state-owned Fortum was denied a licence. The nation's biggest energy utility had proposed building a second nuclear reactor in Loviisa on the south-east coast.
