As far as I know I am 3/16 Irish from my mother's side but wondered whether these Eurogenes K15 results might point to additional Irish from my father's side.

You come out more Irish than me and I am actually Irish. :) I look on these as just showing similarities to close populations. I don't read too much into them as long as they are in the general area. I'm really impressed with your Irishness though. :) I was going to say look at your mixed mode but even on that you show all Irish. All my family that have been tested don't come out as Irish as your scores. Hmm. It's very interesting.

Could be North West English or SW Scots too, but we don't have oracles for those & other areas. The West Scotland is actually Argyll. It is still difficult to find a proper answer atm, but you are thereabouts. :)

I thought my dad would be super Germanic English: I only knew of English and distant German and Norman ancestry. But his Eurogenes showed him as Irish too, and closer to Irish than my half-Irish mother. Doing some more research I'm finding he has ancestors who moved from Ireland in the early 1800s. It was a surprise. So maybe your dad has some a little way back? Was his family from one of the cities? My dad's was from London, lots of Irish went to the cities.

I am guessing there would have been considerable movement over the centuries between SW/W Scotland and Ireland. Hence why one tool gives a strongly Irish set of results and the other West Scottish.

My YDNA line traces back to a marriage in Liverpool in 1810 and then to Bolton,Bury, Manchester and Birmingham . However my haplogroup E-L17 I think is very rare in Ireland. Other paternal lines trace back to Birmingham,Manchester and various small/medium sized towns.

Pop Finder (which is an early version of my program) got it right.
It is essentially English, but with some Continental European compensating for
a substantial Irish.

You're particularly Irish so definitely more so emphasis on that than English. What I do find interesting is your E haplogroup which is more common in Meds, Jews and Arabs, plus the fact that your Oracle X consistently highlights a tiny touch of Somali or Ethiopian. Could be some ancient Arab/African heritage there, perhaps.
Also, how does your Oracle X even work? Every time I try Oracle X on Eurogenes it just says:
"Not Found
The requested URL /cgi-bin/oracle_x_2.cgi was not found on this server."
Anyone else getting the same?

Have heard a story about Roman mercenaries from the Balkans & that could be a source of E. Haven't looked into it for a while though. That or perhaps a neolithic thing.

That is plausible actually, the Roman mercenaries stationary in Britain. It's a possibility for having his paternal haplogroup. Weird that the tiniest bit of Somali/Ethiopian comes up though.

Important things to remember are:
1) The calculator & oracle aren't measuring ancestry directly.
2) When you are dealing with such closely related populations it may be impossible to tell, you should rely on paper genaeology more.
So it could mean you have more Irish ancestry, but your results could simply be within the range of someone of your ancestry. Siblings with the same ancestry can vary more than you might vary from the average of your country (which i guess would be something like northern Britain given you are English + Scottish + Irish), so it might be impossible to tell.

Here's a simple example of how you could be British but still fall at the Irish end. Where are your family from in England btw?

When did you receive the response from Dr McDonald if I may ask? And which e-mail address did you use?

Thanks. It's not very recent (he doesn't answer anymore it seems).
You paternal haplogroup is very likely a neolithic one by the way, possibly older than R1b in the British Isles. I don't buy the Roman hypothesis because E-V13 is one of the most widespread haplogroup in Europe, even if its frequency can be rather low in some parts. Ireland is one of the places in Europe with the lowest diversity of paternal lineages, in line with the insularity and the probable bottlenecked nature of its founding population.
I am more inclined to think your E-L17 results is a vestige of a pre-bronze age diversity, mostly lost in the last three millennia in favour of R1b-L23's descendants (particularly L21). But you'll have to wait a few years for ancient dna testings to settle the issue.

Irish y-dna is mainly due to the clan system and powerful men like Niall of the Nine Hostages having many children. Powerful lineages spread their y-dna in Ireland and just outbred other ydna.

I forgot about this, thanks. It explains how only very few lineages have managed to survive in Ireland.

There's a crazy spike of it around Abergele, North Wales and it's almost certainly linked to Roman mercenaries. I saw a paper years ago correlating spikes in E with Roman settlements in England also, although nowhere in England was it remotely as high as in that region of North Wales.
Percentages of E in British regions according to Sykes' Blood of the Isles (sample sizes for each region >100, AFAIK):
Northumbria: 1.2%
North (Eng): 1.9%
Central (Eng): 0%
East Anglia: 3.2%
London: 3.3%
South (Eng): 4.9%
South West (Eng): 1.3%
North Wales: 3.7%
Mid Wales: 2.7%
South Wales: 2.6%
Argyll: 1.9%
Borders: 1.6%
Northern Isles: 1.5%
Tayside: 1.8%
Grampian: 2.4%
Highland: 1.3% Hebrides: 0%
Strathclyde: 1.7%
