Indeed. It's annoying and quite frankly antiquated. :p But if you learn the pronunciation of the words then it starts to click in your head what letter combinations make which sound. For example, there is often no diacritical mark for an "s" that makes a "sh" sound as opposed to one that makes an "ess" sound. Personally I think a diacritical mark should be introduced like in the Sanskrit Śiva (Shiva). But in any event, one will start to pick up that Sinead and Sean begin with a "sh" sound. That telefeis (TV) is pronounced like "Telefeesh" and so on.

Spelling Gaelic is almost as impossible to a new learner as Mother Tereasa cussing someone out.
