I don't know why some guys think that way. My cousin was saying that to me when I was noting his hair had gotten darker compare to his bright golden hair as a teenager. He was like : yeah I'm so happy it's darker cause it looks really gay that blond :D
Personally I find it attractive and I've see plenty of rough looking super blonde men, it doesn't make them look any less masculine at all.
My mom has an even nicer "theory" bright blue eyes (like hers) on men look gay , lol. Of course I disagree with that too :)

My grandmother also keeps the first hair of my mother, and they were reddish in colour,but i doubt my mother has the recessive gene for redhair, since proper ginger and strawberry blond are present only on my father side (my father's sister is light ginger) altough my maternal grandfather has blue eyes, a ruddy complexion with freckles and light hair, his skin doesn't tan it get only red, propably he has some ginger genes but not homozigotich, propably my mother take her dark-medium brown hair from her mother (my grandmother), she has brown eyes, olive/beige skin and dark brown curly hair, i think that's why my mother propably doesn't have ginger genes, though she still have reddish strains in her hair, genetic is amazing, i still can't explain why she was born with red hair though.

Mine is perhaps the oddest....as a baby my hair was quite red, though not carroty/true ginger red. By age 2 it was yellow blond. At age 8 it was strawberry blond. From age 10-12 onward it was yellow/standard blond again. Now as an adult it is a bit darker, but still blond.

Even stranger is that my beard is red, eyebrows/arm/leg hair blond, and my chest hair is black.

The answer is:

The reason for this change is because the amount of eumelanin in your hair increases as you mature, according to some research. But just why eumelanin production ramps up (or why those specific gene expressions change) is not entirely clear.
(site note: eumelanin determines how black your hair becomes. It is the counterpart of pheomelanin, which regulates redness)

I have seen many cases of blond in early childhood, dark as adult. But I can't say I have ever observed a major haircolor change later on. I have read that a big change happens at puberty for some.

Female hair darkens less with puberty it seems. Probably due to testosterone production. My sister was never as extreme blond as I was, never really towheaded. Just before puberty around age 8/9 I was still light blond while she had a mixed golden blond. By early adolescence we were similar and she may have even been marginally lighter haired than myself.

I was platinum blond until around the age of 4 then it gradually becoming darker as I got older. By age 5 to 11 it was light blonde, then by age 13 I was dark blonde / light brown, now as an adult its dark brown.
