The elderly female Venla (estimated 25 y/o) was one of the Saimaa ringed seals to have given birth to a new pup this year, according to a study by the WWF.
All in all 54 new pups were found, a significant increase from last year's 38.
The current population of the Saimaa ringed seal is about 260, while the WWF's goal is to raise it to about 400, and therefore out of an immediate peril of extinction.
