Russian infrastructure (particularly when it comes to the road network) has a terrible reputation here in Western Europe. We automatically think about stuff like this:

But there seems to be a different side to Russian infrastructure (apart from Moscow and Saint Petersburg's terrific underground systems)- with the country playing a game of catching up with Western Europe.
I have found pictures of Saint Petersburg's brand new КАД (the KAD- Saint Petersburg's beltway):

The Russians are also working on flood defenses (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Petersburg_Dam) around Saint Petersburg across the Gulf of Finland.. the size of which would make Dutch jaws drop in awe:

quality of roads depends on location... as i noticed, really good roads are only in big citys. russain roads worse than european anyway.

That's the same here although our overall quality is of course much better (we are so darned small).

But then again.. Russia has her problems with climate and her incredible size. The only thing she could do is making sure that her population doesn't spread out too much so she wouldn't need to spread her infrastructure all over the country- it would make it easier to maintain. So what Russia could do is to build a bundled "skeleton network" (of roads, rail, pipelines) and try to attract people to live in those areas basically and only repopulate the other areas when the existing areas become too densely populated (as depending on Russians would consider "too densely populated")). Russia's wealth in resources and it's sheer size would provide the country with an almost unlimited space to grow.

Well of course. Russia has an incredible amount of catch up to do. Hampered by her climate, her geographic diversity, lack of funds, her sheer size etc.

If you thought Russia's infrastructure was bad then it's pretty obvious you've not visited Bulgaria before. :D

Well.. that could be sorted Peter the Great-style. Send those lazy shits abroad to learn the trade in other European countries.

I can't remember the last time Bulgaria actually finished a highway project. For instance, this planned highway (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemus_motorway) of 443km started construction in 1980 but only 129km has been built. :coffee:

Ah we have such shit here too. :D The extension of A4 motorway (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A4_motorway_(Netherlands)) (this story will make every Dutchman laugh).

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2b/Rijksweg4.svg

It has been in planning for some 30 years (!!) and that tiny little bit between Delft and Rotterdam (some 16 kilometres) hasn't been build because of "concerns for the local environment and the fears that it may cause sound/air/light pollution for those living around the area". With local municipalities doing their best to block it all because of "environmental" and political reasons.

And that's just one of it's missing links. It has basically turned into a national joke amongst other national jokes like the A6/A9 motorway link (across a natural reserve-- they wouldn't even consider building a tunnel for Pete's sake), the streetcar tunne (http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haagse_tramtunnel)l in The Hague (finally finished- after years of trouble) and the Noord/Zuid (http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noord/Zuidlijn) subway line in Amsterdam.

Noord/Zuid subway link. "klaar" means finished/ completed. Some of the foundations of the stations are (half/partially or almost) completed. The links are not.

Well.. perhaps they should all be sacked and new people should be lured in with good wages and a proper education. :)

Such stuff would be possible in Russia- not here where we are all so fixed on following "proper procedures" and the "rights of workers". Well.. if workers, planners and engineers don't do their job right then fire the lot and bring in people that want to do the job.:)

But that's just my idea.

The Russian government can afford to pay good wages but it won't. :coffee:

Someone on Youtube gave me this website (http://www.whsd.ru/index.php?lng=en&page=1)about an urban motorway in Saint Petersburg that is connected to the beltway. I will thank him tomorrow. :)

It contains interesting information and a lot of pictures so for infrastructure crazies like myself this is a real eye-opener: the Russki's are working while we are sitting on our backsides.
