Bulgaria is currently performing the best of all EU member states, according to Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.

“We are acting in a way so that no one has to push us from the outside. We are demonstrating that we are a strong and disciplined nation which understands that the world is in an economic crisis, and that we have to economize,” Borisov stated before the start of the Day of Europe football match in which the team of the Bulgarian Parliament (led by Borisov) beat the Bulgarian MEPs 4:2.

According to the PM, Bulgaria will be recovering from the crisis faster than the others. He pointed out that the slowdown of reforms across Europe in the recent years has exacerbated the effects of the crisis there to the extent that today EU governments have to resort to unprecedented measures such as cutting public sector salaries, pensions, and increasing taxes.

Asega, no one knows since the gray sector here is significant.
If Borisov was Pinokio I don't want to imagine how long his nose should be;)

According to latest data from the factbook (https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/bu.html), it's at 9.1% which isn't much higher than Holland which is at 5% right now.

The newspaper told me some time ago that our rate is at 6 percent. Bulgaria also has a very large grey sector masking unemployment so it could be a lot higher and no one knows how high.

Asega, with unemployment it's actually the opposite - many people say they are unemployed to get doles (almost 100% of gypsies), while they work on few places at the same time. On the other hand, employers don't pay taxes (no contract - no duty) that way, so everyone is happy in the gray sector.
It really depends on the region. For example, in some regions, especially Western ones and in bigger cities there is even lack of enough workers, so many people from the poorer parts migrate.

So the rate could be substantially lower. Without a proper registration, filing contracts and paying income taxes (or social security payments over wages like we do here). It sounds like a rather corrupt system.
