They look varied indeed.

At this point, I should say I meant 'young' by politicians' standards, i.e. below the age of fifty. Anyway, how do they compare to Italians in your opinion?

Leto
01-18-2015, 10:36 PM
Very interesting. They are still lighter than Lebanon.

They are still lighter than Lebanon.

Well of course, they are in Europe! (Even if at the fringes).

Tiberio

Very interesting. They are still lighter than Lebanon.

Because they aren't lebanese at all and the original phoenician settlers were replaced by a large repopulation of sicilians mostly.

Several people are even pretty passable outside of the South, at least pigmentation-wise.

Except 4 or 5 they are more Southern-Eastern Med shifted than average Italians. Anyway some of them could pass even in Central Europe. Joseph Muscat in that pic (but not in other pics that I have seen on the web) is very similar to a friend of mine from Lombardy.

The key bit is the part in bold. Some of them still clearly look Med even when light-pigmented, especially Kristy Debono.

Most look Italians and a couple can pass as British.

Well it was a British colony, and I'm sure some mixing did take place.

I agree on Debono. These men can pass as white British

Joseph Muscat

There is also a light-eyed woman there.

the most exotic is Borg that is a Germanic surname for what I know, and most of the women are hot

Ulla

Well it was a British colony, and I'm sure some mixing did take place.

Agree, btw this Brit ancestry is recent (more common probably in upper-class people?), so I guess it should be easy to find it.

Kristy Debono imo looks East Med+Dinarid just dyed hair.

It derived from Borgia which is the derivation of Borja.

Many even have English names. Edward, Jason, Anthony, etc. No surprise, the English langauge dominates there, Maltese has become a colloquial dialect and it's mixed with English when spoken. That's what I've read.

By comparison, here are the young MPs from Cyprus. They look noticeably more Near Eastern-shifted than the Maltese: http://www.theapricity.com/forum/showthread.php?111940-Young-MPs-from-Cyprus

Aragonese or Catalan. It's present in Sicily Borgia.

I guess from Borgus>Borgo (abitante del borgo)

The Maltese Borg should be related to Italian Borgo/Borghi/Borghini/Borghetti/Borgese/Borghese/Borghesi...

Joseph Muscat

Surname Muscat is related to Italian surname Moscato/Moscati/Moscatelli/Moscatini... It's a family of grapes. In Sicily there is the Moscato of Siracusa, a wine.

Maltese are genetically identical to Sicilians, because they are descended from the same population. Malta was not highly populated until the Middle Ages.

Here is a chart from Lazaridis et al, where you can see that Sicilians, Maltese, and even the Ashkenazi all are genetically more or less the same.

There is zero British ancestry in Malta. The only mixed Maltese are the dispora types in Australia and Canada.

Yuffayur

Mostly Meds (East, Dinaro, West and South), Alpines, Cromagnid, Atlantid and Nordid, I guess the last two are due to the british presence.

I know some Muscat in Belgium, I just googled it and I found that's a southern French (provençal) surname.

Both Italian and French "Muscat/Muscato" surnames (variants included) share the same linguistic root (the grape). And in Sicily there was a little Provençal influence that dates back to the middle ages. BTW it exists also another explanation but now it's too late. :)
