Hollywood star Russell Crowe walked out on a BBC Radio 4 interview after being riled by accusations that he had made Robin Hood sound Irish.

Tough guy Crowe, 46, swore after presenter Mark Lawson suggested that hints of his accent did not sound English.

The actor has already faced concerns from critics about the accuracy of his speech.

Questioned on arts show Front Row about whether the Irish tinges were deliberate, he snapped: "You've got dead ears, mate. You've seriously got dead ears if you think that's an Irish accent."

As Lawson reiterated that there were only "hints" of Irish, Crowe responded: "Bollocks."

The Gladiator star continued to talk about the background of the character but then returned to the accusation, adding: "I'm a little dumbfounded you could possibly find any Irish in that character - that's kind of ridiculous, but it's your show."

Debate has raged for many years about whether the historical figure could be claimed by Nottingham or Yorkshire as he has become an important source of tourist income.

Trying to pin him down, Lawson asked Crowe whether the voice was supposed to be from northern England.

The Oscar-winner hit back: "No, I was going for an Italian - missed it? F*** me."

Voice coaches for the production have said previously that they were aiming for an accent closer to Rutland, which is south east of Nottingham in the East Midlands.

After failing to answer a question about whether he had not wanted to deliver a famous line in Gladiator - also directed by Robin Hood film-maker Ridley Scott - he got up to leave, saying: "I don't get the Irish thing, by the way. I don't get it at all."

I actually love Crowe. I think he is a man's man actor. I'm surprised he didn't hit Lawson. I would have, and just to rub it in have called him a 'fecking eejit.'

I have never liked Russel Crowe, the South Park parody of him was funny.

They'll bitch over an Irish hint in the accent, but stick a black man in the tights and no one would bat an eyelash.

Silly story anyway, I would rather we had some realism; he robbed everyone and kept the cash. After all what self respecting outlaw would risk his life robbing heavily armed men and handing it over to shit kickers?

Robin Hood the socialist, lol.:D

Forget the accent - why is Homer Simpson staring as the thieving archer? One can hardly tell him apart from Mark Addy nowadays. Two fat guys running around in the trailer and a Jewish-Guatemalan king shouting "Robin Hood ... an outlaaaaaaw!" I don't get it. Well, of course I get it, but it's not good.

Then the rebel hero says, "We demand liberty by law!" That really touches my heart. Whatever the hell it means.

It also seems to forget the part that Robin Hood justified his actions by stating that he was doing those acts to protect the intrests of king Richard Lionheart. And when he returned Robin for a while stopped with his thieving.

I saw Robin Hood on Wednesday, great film :thumb001:....even though the beach-fighting scene is closer to D-Day fantasy than Medieval warfare

He's smug, overrated (most of those ratings are in his own mind) and has appeared in one c**p Ridley Scott film after the other. The Metro's critic said RH was ok'ish (apart from laughing about the accent) so hopefully this effort will be an improvement on their previous fare.

Dunno about him being a man's kind of man / actor. Am struggling to think of any at the moment. Mark Strong was alright in RocknRolla and Body of Lies. (He's also in RH).

Nope infact, just to spoil it all, he dies very quickly at the beginning, unlike all the agony out of gangrene he suffered from in real life.:(

I've heard some of Hiberno-English comes from Elizabethan so it would make sense to an extent.

What's worse is Colin Farrell making Alexander and his whole court Irish. :D

Luckily the studio hid all phones prior to the interview.

I've yet to see the film so i cannot comment on the accent, one thing that is important to bare in mind is that the English language we use today here in England is totally different to medievel English they spoke back then.
So for an actor to be precise, and to get a medievel accent would in my opinion be nigh on impossible.

I enjoyed Gladiator, Master and Commander, I don’t remember much about that, I get the impression not much actually happened…

I might download it but I’m pretty bored with Robin of the Hood, I shouldn’t be for a local legend and all but……

There was rumour of a film about the events of 1066 coming out sometime soon, about time.

He's smug

All good actors are supposed to be. Olly Reed was the same, and he is another actor I would bend over backwards to drink with.

Each to their own really.

Indeed. Due for the 15th November this year.

I don't mind a bit of arrogance if the geezer can back up that swagger with results. I'm just not convinced Crowe cuts the mustard but it's a case of personal preference and of course I'm not necessarily right or wrong about the subject.

As for Oliver Reed, the man was a giant among men. Going drinking with him was strictly a job for a professional, don't think I would have relished the opportunity. :D

Olly Reed has pride of place on the wall in my sitting room, he's sitting down with shotgun and ammo slung over his shoulder, Black & White:thumb001:. A wedding present from the better half.
