View Full Version : Pig's milk?

I'm increasingly wondering where I could get pig's milk and why I never find any products made of pig's milk, like cheese or yoghurt? We have cow milk, sheep milk, goat milk and even reindeer milk purchasable in exotic shops. I've tried all kinds of milk and find all sorts rather distasteful, with the exception of cow milk, of course. :wink Like people like Karl I love milk and pigs are a part of our European culture for millenias, similar to cows. Is there any reason why there's no milk of pigs? I've read they can give up to 10 liter a day, that's more than goats can give.

Pardon if my question sounds a bit strange but I can't find any satisfying answer. The people around me don't know anything about it and so do I.

Porcine do lactate and their milk I will assume would taste great, because it is made of 8.5% fat in relation to the fat that makes up 3.5% of the components in cows milk.

8,5% fat isn't that high if you only want to drink a single cup. But the post contains some new informations to me, that's a clear help! The source states that the collection of the milk would be the main problem, so I'd imagine it's more a matter of price and demand and not of incompatibility? If I ever meet a farmer in the animal husbandry industry I'll ask him if I could try and taste it. I'm really curious about it, you could call it my foible.

Sometime ago I asked this same question to someone... who gave me the answer but I can't remember!!!!

I'm trying but I can't even remember who was this person...

Anyway in castilian we say "Del cerdo se aprovecha todo" (from the pigs all is profit)...

...

Yes... Pigs, like humans, only produce milk during lactation. That is.

Same reason there is no dog's milk, for example. These mammals just aren't capable of producing too much milk.
BTW, drinking milk from other species is not quite normal behavior. Maybe we developed that during severe conditions for survival and only some tribes (those who are lactose tolerant now). The only natural milk for us is human milk during first years of our life. So, all we - milk lovers (milk is among my favorite foods, that's why I'm not Vegan) are quite unnatural in behavior, even our genes for lactose tolerance after childhood are something odd.

I think that vegetarian animals' milk is more palatable than say, rat or cat milk.

Buffalo milk is pretty much standard in India and mixed with cow milk and the high fat content is delicious.

Yes we use that here (but not mixed) as well. Buffalo yoghort is a delicacy, because it's like butter. As far as I know, goat's milk is the most beneficial one and it's composition is closer to human's milk. That's why they often use goat milk to feed new born babies, because cow's milk is too allergenic. Even extreme raw food vegans sometimes admit raw goat milk is one of the best foods.

Mare (horse) milk is actually the healthiest for humans, because it is lean and contains much more vitamins an nutrients than cow's milk and even goat's milk. The problem is harvesting.

I don't know about pig but I know that for mares to lactate, they need to physically see their foal to produce milk. The only way of getting milk would be to have the foal start feeding, push it away and collect it. Unlike Cows or Goats which, after giving birth can continue producing milk so long as it is harvested.

Perhaps pigs are the same way?

Mares are hard to milk. In fact, most mammals stop producing milk after their baby is old enough, however we lengthen the process of lactating by daily milking which is stimulating the glands. The breeds of milk cows we use are special and artificially selected to have bigger glands. As for sheep milk, here it is available only for few months in the spring. Not sure about goats and buffaloes.
BTW, once we "milked" our doberman. She suffered from pseudo-pregnancy and the stagnant milk in her glands could cause mastitis. The amount wasn't big enough to be used by human :D

But you can't compare dogs with cows, goats or pigs. Pigs can give 10 liter milk a day and hence I'd imagine the quantity isn't the problem. Goats or sheeps give less milk a day but there's an active scene for goat and sheep milk products. Insufficient domestication could be a reason. But then again, same counts for reindeers and goats. :wink Seems there's no clear answer.

Oink oink ;) It's not uncommon that abandoned animal babies drink the milk of other animal races. I've seen puppies, foals and sheeps who drink cow's milk. The cows hadn't an angry expression on their faces and some even developed mother instincts for the adopted animal. There was a documentary sequence where a caring cow defends an abandoned and adopted foal against dogs.

I think first of all it is very difficult to milk pigs. From what I read they do not give large amounts of milk. This makes it unsuitable for large scale production. Then the milk has too little casein and is unsuitable for cheese production. Although I heard it is used as a kind of folk medicine.

What's wrong with fat? It's better for you than carbs.

I think that Svanhild's obsession with pig milk is taking being German a little too far... :coffee:

Rather like the ladies in the well-known pig porn movie where the two cheeky frauleins get done in the barn.

Depends on the fats type, the carbs type and your body. But, however, whole milk is better than low fat.
