I did a similar poll regarding Europeans, so here we go.

I think that Asia should be ruled by Japs as a most supreme of all Asians, they are Swedish equivalent in the east.

Stereotypical Asians are not that dark and don't wear headscarves.

Which goes to show that there is a kind of hierarchy in how people regard how 'Asian' or how 'European' different ethnic groups and nationalities within the respective continents look.

First they should definitely fix their demographic situation. But yeah, I discussed it with my friend, he is a fan of Japan. We agreed that the Russian Far East would be much better developed if it was ruled by the Japanese.:)

Well, there are some "benchmarks" everywhere.

Well, there are some "benchmarks" everywhere.

But the point is that Japanese and Malays are both equally Asian, but they are very different kinds of Asians. Likewise, Swedes and Sicilians/Maltese are both equally European, but they are very different kinds of Europeans.

Basically, you're correct.

Basically, you're correct.

But the big question is: why is the Japanese/NE Asian look what people generally equate with "Asian"? Similarly, why is the Swedish/Germanic/Northern European look what people generally equate with "European"?

When people say "Asians", the first thing that comes to my mind are east-Asians, like the Japanese, Koreans and Chinese.

Where I come from, you will rarely see someone describe an Indian or something like that as "Asian". Asian is like another word for Mongoloid (race).

Yes, but the point is that Malays are also Mongoloids, only darker-skinned.

East Asian countries are much more prominent.

True, but if I remember correctly, some recent genetic tests, such as Eurogenes K8, show that southeast asians have less ENA percentages (more common among east-asians, the "mongoloid genetic element", let's call it), and have admixture with ancestral populations associated with south Asians and native Australians or other people of the Oceania.

That's also a point. We hear a 100 times more of Japan and China, than we hear about Cambodia, etc.

Although no doubt during the Khmer Rouge regime it was the other way round...

Both are equally "Asian". But obviously because East Asia has a disproportionate influence than SE Asia, it is thought of most when one mentions "Asians", which is a rather meaningless term in general.

Not really. Northern Chinese and Mongolians traditionally did not eat rice. Southern Chinese, Japanese, Koreans and SE Asians were traditionally rice eaters. Rice is awesome btw.

The Japanese have only been ahead since they industrialized during the Meiji era in the late 19th Century. Before then, China was always the most advanced Asian civilization, and I believe it will take the mantle again in the next 1-2 generations.

No, just a prediction of obvious trends. Japan is stagnant while China is rapidly rising and vibrant.

The Japanese are still ahead in many fields, but that is likely to change in the near future looking at the trends.

Both, though stereotypically, I would choose picture one.

What made me realize picture two was equally relevant was looking though an Indonesian online friend's pictures of her classmates. The second picture would fit in with her classmates.
