In this thread, I advocate the sharing of our cultural richnesses in the form of music. Post a clip from YouTube or anywhere else from a great composer of yours...or just a nice little folk song! On with the propaganda!

Fine-fine, I'll start, you lazies.

Brahms, Hungarian Dance No. 1 (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=uqzU7JoApks&feature=related)
Brahms, Hungarian Dance No. 5 (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=3X9LvC9WkkQ)
Weren't composed by a Hungarian, but they're about the country, magnificently reflecting our spirit and culture. Hail Brahms!
Here (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=f-p8YeIQkxs&feature=related) is a slower, more melancolic version of No. 1, that might be even more matching.

Bánk Bán - Hazám, hazám (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3DkDxwS6NA&feature=related)
Roughly translates to 'Home, Home', this is the main and most famous song of a theatrical piece called Bánk Bán, a patriotic story set in the XIIIth Century. The tenor is magnificent.

Ott ahol zúg az a négy folyó (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwwOXB6oDqo)
Somewhat instrumentally modern version, but the vocal is perfectly traditional and professional. The title means 'There, where the four rivers rumble', and it refers to Transylvania, which was taken away from Hungary first in 1920 and second in 1944. Note the positive Romanian comments below. :D

Szép vagy, gyönyörű vagy Magyarország - Radio broadcast from the fourties (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=kp-TG5v0emY&feature=related)
Szép vagy, gyönyörű vagy Magyarország - Presented by the Reformed Church of Sárospatak (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=bnFVPeBQe64)
And finally, possibly the most beautiful Hungarian patriotic song ever came to be, this too was born in the revisionist era(between the two World Wars). The title translates to 'Hungary, you're fair, you're beautiful'.

Se canto, a great traditional song famous to Pyreneans, official anthem in the Aran Valley and regarded by Occitanists as the unofficial anthem of Occitania. Written according to legend by Gaston Phoebus, count of Foix and lord of Bearn in the 14th century, for her wife retired at this side of the mountains.

Lyrics are in Occitan and say:
If it sings, let it sing / It's not singing for me / It sings for my love / Who's far away from me
Outside my window / There's a little bird / Singing this song all night through / These mountains / They are so high / That they keep me from seeing / Where my love has gone / Lay down, oh mountains / And rise up, oh plains / So I may see where my love has gone / These mountains / Will Lay down so low / That my dear love / Will come close to me

I like music that is based on traditional Finnish folk music and poetry but that at the same time is modern and innovative.

This powerful song by Värttinä is about an old man who, bitten by a snake, casts a curse on it:

Folk Against Fascism, did some digging, to be honest I don’t really give a damn about an artists political leanings, I have no desire to meet them or become friends they are just bodies that write and perform music I like. However FAF (probably an apt acronym) seem to be hypocritical. They have claimed to want to keep politics out of folk music (no problem with that) but then we read this:

"Music has been a very powerful political tool, usually for the left," she says. "What concerns me is that the BNP could do the same thing from a far-right perspective."

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8191094.stm

FAF have also been linked to the UAF, UNISON, The Communist Party of Great Britain….need I write more…

Wise. I don't let it bother me unless an artist is particularly extreme and outspoken - to the point where the music is merely a vessel for the politics. There are some punk bands I used to listen to like this. And it goes both ways - I won't listen to Skrewdriver, nor a far-left band like Propaghandi.

But most folk bands listed as supporting FAF likely don't support much beyond the act of opposing fascism so it's hard to judge them for a bit of forgiveable ignorance.

Some Seto (South-Estonian) folksongs

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApW5N46VSjE

A young girl is walking on fields. She sees an old man.The old man is asking "Will you marry me? I am quite rich, you will inherit it all...Marry me!"
The girl: "No, you are too old for me, you are not hot!I want to marry a young, handsome man!"
And "Hoi-lii-lii" is a refrain.:)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66XbgyS-GEY

Pirgo went to Pechory(the "capital" of Seto).Pirgo wanted to drink some
Seto homebrew vodka called hansa.Pirgo was given some hansa. But Pirgo
got very drunk and Pirgo was vapulated and was arrested.
And that is the end of this sad story.Tsukai-nukai is refrain

Eirinn go Brach !!

The song in its original form, Searlas Og (meaning "Young Charles" in Irish) refers to Bonnie Prince Charlie and dates back to the second Jacobite rising, during the reign of George II in 1745-6.
In the early 20th century it received new verses by the nationalist poet Padraig Pearse and was often sung by IRA members and sympathisers, during the Easter Rising. It was also sung as a fast march during the Irish War of Independence.
Since 1916 it has also been known under various other titles, notably Dord na bhFiann (Call of the Fighters) or An Dord Feinne. The latter title is associated with Padraig Pearse in particular. This version is dedicated to the pirate or "Great Sea Warrior" Grainne Ni Mhaille. She was a formidable power on the west coast of Ireland in the late 16th century.

Lyrics and translation
Óró 'Sé do bheatha 'bhaile,
Óró 'Sé do bheatha 'bhaile,
Óró 'Sé do bheatha 'bhaile,
Anois ar theacht an tsamhraidh!

Óró 'Sé do bheatha 'bhaile,
Óró 'Sé do bheatha 'bhaile,
Óró 'Sé do bheatha 'bhaile,
Anois ar theacht an tsamhraidh!

'Sé do bheatha a bhean ba léanmhar,
B' é ár gcreach tú bheith i ngéibhinn,
Do dhúiche bhreá i seilibh meirleach...
Is tú díolta leis na Gallaibh!

Tá Gráinne Mhaol ag teacht thar sáile,
Óglaigh armtha léi mar gharda,
Gaeil iad féin is ní Gaill ná Spáinnigh...
Is cuirfidh siad ruaig ar Ghallaibh!

A bhuí le Rí na bhFeart go bhfeiceann,
Muna mbíonn beo ina dhiaidh ach seachtain,
Gráinne Mhaol is míle gaiscíoch...
Ag fógairt fáin ar Ghallaibh!

--//--

Óró! You are welcome home!
Óró! You are welcome home!
Óró! You are welcome home!
Now that summer is coming

Welcome Oh woman who was so afflicted,
It was our ruin that you were in bondage,
Our fine land in the possesion of theives,
And sold to the foreigners

Grainne Mhaol is coming over the sea,
Armed warriors along with her as guard,
They are Irishmen, not English or Spanish,
And they will rout the foreigners

May it please the God of Miracles that we may see,
Although we only live a week after it,
Grainne Mhaol and a thousand warriors,
Dispersing the foreigners.

The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down
nnS9M03F-fA

The song is about a southern soldier watching northern troops taking down Dixie (the Southern flag) after his nations destruction at the end of the American Civil War while remembering the loss of his brother during the war. The Union cavalry "cut up the tracks", and blocked the escape of Lee's army after the fall of Petersburg, attacking the fleeing Confederates. This was the end of Lee's army. For the south the war was now "The Lost Cause".

Ruins of Petersburg 1865. Petersburg was the site of 30 miles and nine months of trench warfare during the siege. (same tactics as WW1)

Já sou quem tu queres que eu seja:
tenho emprego e uma vida normal.
Mas quando acordo e não sei
quem eu sou, quem me tornei,
eu começo a bater mal...
O teu bem faz-me tão mal.

Já me enquadro na tua estrutura,
não ofendo a tua moral,
Mas quando me impões o meu bem
e eu ainda o sinto aquém,
o teu bem faz-me tão mal,
O teu bem faz-me tão mal.

Sei que esperas que não desiluda,
que, por bem, siga o teu ideal.
Mas não quero seguir ninguém,
por mais que me queiras bem.
O teu bem faz-me tão mal
O teu bem faz-me tão mal.

Sei que me vais virar do avesso
se eu te disser foi em mim que apostei.
Não, não é nada que me rale,
mesmo que me faças mal.
Do avesso te direi
"O teu mal faz-me tão bem!"

A folk love song from Salento called "The sound of the sea".

Ikc4F7avBko

It is an Apulian dialect (Salentine variety) and speaks about an impossible love between an aristocratic woman and a soldier. The woman is sent to Spain to marry a noble, the soldier to Turkey to fight Turks, yet he promises the woman eternal love. The first part is slow the second fast and probably it accompanies folk dances (pizzica).

Check out this Celtic northeastern Portuguese folk.
The pauliteiros (pau=stick; pauliteiros= stick players) come from the Miranda plateau they speak the 2nd official language in Portugal (Mirandese)and ethnographers think this is a 2000+ years old dance, the remnants of a spear dance that was common in other places.
Dancers wear skirts and the colors have meanings that I do not know.
Please forgive my praise but I think it's brilliant.

Yes they are quite similar despite ours is more energetic and the tradition has a package that comes with other things not just the dance.
Your dancers look like moors themselves.
Ours must be older, research leads to pre roman. But hey, I'm not the researcher here. Anyway, the truth is that moors have been there only for brief "moments" and that was at least 1300 to 1200 years ago.

well, sword or stick dance could be Celtic tradition, i am just saying this kind of dance spread onto Europe, in particular with naval nations who were fighting against Moors.

Dance is actually a about fighting and beating Moors.

A sad song about how it was written in a book about the Turkish tsar asking the Serbs to give up all of Kosovo, Skoplje and all the lands where the Serbs dawn, and if they were to refuse they will be killed. The Serbs said we don't give you any of it.

Serbia has three kinds of folk songs-old roots with byzantine sounds and the traditional folk.

Era um redondo vocábulo
Uma soma agreste
Revelavam-se ondas
Em maninhos dedos
Polpas seus cabelos
Resíduos de lar,
Pelos degraus de Laura
A tinta caía
No móvel vazio,
Congregando farpas
Chamando o telefone
Matando baratas
A fúria crescia
Clamando vingança,
Nos degraus de Laura
No quarto das danças
Na rua os meninos
Brincando e Laura
Na sala de espera
Inda o ar educa

I'm a big fan of neo-folk music which combines some traditional folk with contemporary or some dark aspects. I got into it several years ago but haven't kept up with it much. There is a lot (like all genres of music) that just isn't very good, but some artists make some of the most inspired music I've heard.

My favorite folk group is Wardruna. I'd give you a link to youtube but it's rather senseless to listen to just one song. It's one of those things where you have to listen to the whole album to fully take it in; preferably with headphones, alone, and at the point just before you fall asleep.

Wardruna is nice indeed, to me Celtic and Germanic Folk is the best.
I seem to like turanid aswell

This is more of a fusion of pop/jazz and folk/traditional: (http://www.discogs.com/Rosa-Dos-Ventos-Rimando-Contra-A-Mar%C3%A9/release/4184946)

Sobre uma matriz tradicional (açoriana), o disco desenvolve-se em várias direcções, desaguando por vezes em afloramentos jazzísticos, numa linguagem tipo pop-ligeira, ou até, no ocasional solo de guitarra "santanesco".
