I think most of the country is a mix of the two pics, triracial. And because of quadroons pic number one would be more common.

Only the coastal areas of some states are like number 1

Not true!First photo looks to be from a poor neighboorhod in Rio de Janeiro, few places in Brazil look like it.

If you mix and match the people between the two photos, then it'd be more typical.

Second one is surely easier to find, but the first one is not rare as well, depending on the region and social class.

None of them would be universally considered White here. Maybe one or two from the socond picture would be considered White by some.

Most people take as a reference what they see on TV, which is usually the carnival and national soccer team.

OK, I can understand that.

On a somewhat different topic, I've noticed that, depending on the ancestry/racial composition of the particular Brazilian person, the definition for races seem to change a lot.

For instance, my friends of colonial stock, that look similar to the people of the second picture, consider themselves and other people like that to be White, and only see as non-White someone with loads of non-European ancestry (like those in the first pic). Differing from that, my friends of recent immigrant ancestry (north Italian and German) tend to have a somewhat strict view of how they define "White", and they will usually agree someone like that (2nd pic) shows too much ambiguous looks to be considered White.

It's like that thing we were talking about Ronaldo the other day. He sees himself as White, but here I often hear people simply call him Black, even though he is mixed.

I guess the way a person sees himself here affects how they see the others.

Yeah, but even my fully italian friend considers this kind of people to be white, since he has grown in a metropolis that is too diverse.

I opened a thread with crowd pics from all over Brazil here: http://www.theapricity.com/forum/showthread.php?126447-Brazil-a-visual-report-(crowd-pictures)&highlight=Caic%F3. Predominantly african (genetically and by looks) are a minority in Brazil overall, being more common in the coastal areas and in states like Rio de Janeiro and Bahia, for example.

To think of our football team as representative is as stupid as taking the English football team or the American dream team as representatives of their countries (when everyone knows people of more african ancestry tend to be over represented in these areas, the same goes to dancing people from Rio in the carnival, dancing in Rio's carnival surely gets more african in ancestry people than the average person from Rio is, and surely more when speaking of the whole country):

Of course that is not representative at all, that is only a portion of Brazil's society. Unfortunately that is the image of Brazil that goes around the world through different channels such as soccer, tourist promotions, adult entertainment industry, etc.

BTW, the Favelas (slums) also make it to international news all the time.

Well ask any european what they think of when they hear Brazil, most will say, samba, football and Rio. Just like people think of sexy loose blonde women when they hear Sweden. Every country has some stereotypes thanks to media.

But Sweden is a smaller, less populated and much more homogenous country. Brazil is quite large, and with a big population and its composition is far more different than the stereotype the media likes to play up. The most popular musical genre in Brazil, f.e, is Sertanejo music, not samba, which is more typical of Rio (even though it came originally from Salvador, Bahia). I've never ever seen Sertanejo music mentioned on international media outlets.

Random pics of Ibirapuera park in São Paulo city:

Ibirapuera Park (Portuguese: Parque Ibirapuera) is a major urban park in São Paulo, Brazil. It has a large area for leisure, jogging and walking, as well as a convention center. Its importance to São Paulo is comparable to that of the Central Park to New York City. The Ibirapuera is one of Latin America largest city parks, together with Chapultepec Park, in Mexico City and Simón Bolívar Park in Bogota.

Football supporters from Salvador, Bahia, the most African influenced major city of Brazil (it is overall quite mixed though, and nowhere near the most African city outside of Africa as incorrectly portrayed abroad; Detroit, f.e, is easily more African).

I feel that way implicitly because I have grown up surrounded by Brazilians in my town and they all tend to be mixed, and the media portrays a certain image of Brazil so even though to me all Brazilians are 'Brazilian', in my head when I think of Brazil I have a certain image, is all. I hope that makes sense. Americans often do not get to see the distinctly European side of Brazil because it is not showcased as much.
