There is strong East African influence in Aasif's phenotype. Initially, I thought he was an African born Gujarati, like Shaila Patel who also has native African influence (despite her lighter complexion):

But in Aasif's case, it likely isn't recent African ancestry, but from the distant past. Probably from the Mughal era since they're known to have brought over Habishis.

Habishis werent habeshas (ie horners)...they were misnamed as such because their point of exit was 'habshi' ports like Zeila, Massawa, etc. But they were Nilotic or Bantu people from east africa (like the Swahili)

Aasif looks pseudo-Libyan to me, handsome man IMO.

his last name *Mandvi* is from the name of a port in the Kachch district of Gujarat, and since he also speaks the language he is one ethnically, even if born in cosmopolitan Mumbai like large numbers of dawoodi bohras are . It would be interesting to find the extent of Horner influence on the western coast and the other way, the extent of Indian influence on the East African coast, since I know Kachchis, along with Balochs were the earliest seafarers to explore east Africa because they had a monopoly on the Indian ocean for the longest time
