It's more of a haute cuisine* version of hot-dog-eating contests.

Pat "Deep Dish" Bertoletti of Chicago has become the world poutine eating champion today after scarfing down 13 pounds of gravy-and-cheese-soaked fries in a mere 10 minutes.

He edged out 11 fellow stars of Major League Eating and three Canadian amateur eaters by consuming box after box of poutine at Toronto's BMO Field in the first ever World Poutine Eating Championship.

And it's not his first time going into a fiendish food frenzy --Bertoletti holds 26 other of these types of records including titles for gobbling down a 16-inch pizza, over nine pounds of blueberry pie, 1.75 gallons of ice cream, 275 pickled jalepenos -- even a whole turkey.

Not everyone lasted the entire gluttonous contest, as two competitors threw up and had to call it quits.

Bertoletti won a trophy and the $750 top prize at the event, which was held prior to the Toronto FC/New England Revolution Major League Soccer game.

*Good to know that Poutine is haute cuisine, while hot dogs are not. ;)

Hehe, the commercial below your post shows some kind of Mega hamburger. As if it is likely that anyone would feel the urge to eat one after reading your post.:D

Gross

...and this coming from a member of the ethnic group who invented poutine (we don't consider it real food BTW).

Poutine is NOT haute cuisine. lol. More like a snack you have late at night after having a few drinks, smoking a few doobs, and you've got the munchies.

It makes me fear for the state of the world when binge eating is a feat.

Plus, it's nothing. When I was sick with hyperthyroidism and my metabolism was working in overdrive I could have kicked any of their asses.

Not that I'm proud of that, just saying.

You do have a point there. These contests are a bit ridiculous, but I guess there are worse things out there.

Our societies are so wealthy and generally successful that we can waste time and money and produce in search of entertainment. I don't see a thing bad about diversions or distractions, and I lament the potential onset of a world of gloom-and-doomers and other humourless harpies.

I am quite certain that our own ancestors would have boasted about how much they could eat and drink just a much as they were to boast about their prowess in battle, how their crops were of superior quality of who had the best ale or mead in the land.

Exactly, we don't need to worry about silly things like famine etc

See, I like to enjoy good food... and that doesn't mean stuffing it in my face. I like to savour it.

I probably don't eat 13lbs of anything in an entire week.

Are you implying we can't, and don't already, also feed the world's poor out of the generosity of our pathetically bleeding hearts?

Yeah it would probably take more than the newspaper for this guy to make it through a bathroom break.

First Canada invents a national dish that is a pile of french fries with a pile of cheese curds on top, with a pile of gravy on top of that: poutine.

Then Canada has a World Poutine Eating Competition.

The winner eats 13 pounds of poutine in 10 minutes. Thirteen. Pounds. Of. Poutine.

But! He is from Chicago. Sorry, Canada!

You can't outglutton the good ol' U.S. of A. But you're cute for trying, eh?

Victorious poutine-ingester Pat "Deep Dish" Bertoletti says he intends to spend his $750 cash prize at a bar: "I’m going to put it back into Toronto’s economy.” Now that's right neighborly. :thumbs up

Still, if I hadn't gotten my thyroid removed I could have kicked this guy's ass.

... and still lost weight.

I have never eaten this. Is it good? It looks like something you would find on the floor of some roller coaster.

So this is a combination of french fries, cottage cheese (cheese curds), and gravy ?!? Yummm ...

Ladies, I'm sure that none of you needs to diet (:thumb001:); but supposing that you did, just think of this whenever you get hungry. :D
