Can anyone help me figure out his background? As far as I know it's Spanish/English/native American. Someone suggested Quaker and others have suggested Semitic. The family left Spain during the inquisition and moved to England -name Attawell, possibly formerly Al-tawil (guess).

This is my g-g-g-g-uncle. (Photo courtesy Don Hakenson and used with permission, contact info available upon request).

Just seeing if I can bump this to the top. Don't want to have to repost.

The south European Caucasian type, from the Med region.

Honestly, it's difficult to tell because the picture isn't very good.

Med: Mediterranean? In other words Spanish or similar?

I know, sorry! he was alive during the civil war and I only managed to find one other photo but not sure I can share it (permission).

Yes indeed. The eyes might be Semitic influenced.

This is the uncle of that woman whose eyes everyone said were really Semitic.

I always assumed it was Native American genes because that ancestor was only a few generations removed (1700 to 1860ish?) while the potential Semitic blood was from the time of the inquisition (1500s or so). Do you think it could have remained that strong? In his war records he was described as swarthy which is odd for an English settler (I suppose even with some native blood).

Here - it's cited so I'm hoping it's usable with permission - https://thekloverproject.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/ewell-attwell-photo.jpg (it's courtesy of Scottsville Museum in Virginia). This is him much older (#94).
