LOGVINOVE, Ukraine — When Russian-backed rebels went on the offensive in east Ukraine a month ago, the focal point of the clashes quickly switched to Debaltseve, a strategically key rail junction linking their two unsanctioned states. For weeks, Ukraine’s government denied rebel claims to have the town surrounded, even as artillery fire prompted most civilians to flee, killed hundreds, and destroyed the town beyond recognition.
On Tuesday, however, rebels seized most of the town and took several Ukrainian soldiers captive. A catastrophic defeat is now all but inevitable. In the days preceding their victory, photographer Max Avdeev embedded with the First Slavyansk Brigade of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic in the nearby town of Logvinove. The rebels had just seized the town, cutting Debaltseve off from the last road leading to Ukrainian territory. The soldiers were mostly local volunteers, though their commanding officers were Russian — as were the men who delivered them tanks and artillery. As the deadline for a new cease-fire deal came and went overnight on Sunday, the rebels kept on shelling Debaltseve.
“We let them out once, and now they’ve come back to fight with us again. We told them to surrender in Debaltseve, but they didn’t. Now we’re not going to let anyone out,” says Sergey, nicknamed “Kunduz,” the company commander from Uglegorsk who has been fighting from Slavyansk since May.
“As soon as our enemy started to run out of breath, suddenly it’s time for peace, we lay down our weapons? Did our comrades die for nothing?”

I do understand. Most people in western Europe only "know" war from their online-pc-action-ego-shooter-games.

Still pretty old material and tactics in use, deaths would be much higher if the conflict was total war.

I don't think NATO would send troops to Ukraine. The West only very recently officially recognised that the Ukrainian army is fighting Russian troops.

Almost 100% of hardware in use is what was left from USSR when it split. That is over 20 years old.

Tactics are dictated by environment. Keep in mind it's the middle of great steppe where 5-8 km of direct visibility is a norm. If you're sitting on a hill you could see as far as 15 km sometimes.

The government troops took a massive beating in Debaltseve. As hard it is may be to believe, govt troops are now outgunned by the separatists it seems.

You're so freaking delusional. Do you really think Russians will be afraid of US or NATO? Or is it the way you're trying to encourage yourself because in reality you're so afraid of Russians you have to verbally abuse them without a slightest chance of retaliation to feel any safer?

Zakharchenko, the leader of DNR, reported they have taken a huge amount of vehicles and various ammunition at Debaltsevo. There were literally trains full of all sorts of ammo taken by DNR.

True, but operating artillery from fixed positions for long periods is not really from this century when conventional forces are fighting.

Both should have UAVs and counter-battery units in reserve, maybe only Russia has these?

Same goes for the elementary fixed positions of the infantry, they make good dummy targets but dont offer much real protection.

I could not get Finns to stay in those positions for long periods, they would want to move and scatter around and conceal positions as best as possible, even if in the open.

It must have been a large group of fighters that surrounded them! Maybe they truly have Kiev in sight.

Not really. According to DNR accounts Ukrainian army had 3 times more troops in Debaltsevo than DNR employed to surround them. All that army was just sitting there on stockpiles of weapons and ammunition waiting for orders. They must've been preparing for something but once they realised they were being surrounded their top command had tried to flee but was shot down. Without appropiate leadership they became disorganised and demoralised. There was no way they could put up a good fight.

It's all correct but apparently as this conflict shows us Ukies are not the brightest bunch. It's regular occurence when rebels assaulting an army definately better armed and 3-5 times bigger in numbers yet rebels just destroying them with little effort. Only small diversion groups from Ukies presenting a real problem, most of their army is just a cannon fodder.

Thing is, the separatists are motivated and have something to fight for. They have a cause. The newly-drafted soldiers from Kiev have no cause or motivation, they just follow orders, are afraid and get demoralised easily.

...and second, there is nothing to be afraid of a country with a failed economy ruined by sanctions and hanging on for dear life.

I see you are a big expert in economics. Which university degree do you have: FoxNews or CNN?

It's been pointed many times the sanctions as they are now will only improve Russian economy on the long run. True such a measures would mean an imminent death for any economy based on credit but Russia is not like that. It's a country with the largest stockpile of resources in the world and bound to do well regardless of availability of external finances. In fact credit was a factor holding it back and serving as a mean for pumping resources out. Now it's gone and I hope gone for good as it's a good thing.

Only delusional person here is you thinking your precious russia is so mighty...

Russia is the one of only two countries in the world capable of destroying the entire world 3 times over. And recently there were concerns if the other country is still able to do the same since it didn't developed any new toys of that scale for last 30 years. Thus Russia's might is a fact.

...and scary.

So in your universe the world is made of scary tough mofo's and whimps only, right? I see the whole bunch of insecurities right here. You seems to be in desperate need to look scary in order to hide your childish fears.

But in real world it's enough to be just strong. Don't need to intimidate everyone around to live a comfortable prosperous happy life. And just like that Russia doesn't seek the creation of image of being scary. It's all wild imagination of some western mediamaniacs.

Pretty much like Cuban Revolution. Cuban army launched an offensive, Operation Verano (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Verano), to swept out the rebel guerrilla, 12,000 vs only 300 men and yet did lose.

Debaltsevo is like completely finished. Experts say circa 20% of Ukrainian ammos were there and now fallen in hands of Rebels as war spoils. Only in last two days around 50 Ukr soldiers lost their lives and +300 Pow. Yesterday Russians started now push in Mariupol front, they attack villages right East of city. Debaltsevo is Ukr failure big shock as I also expected they will resist more. Way is now open for Russian rebels, not only South front in Mariupol, they can also progress North to Kharkiv. People say here why not enough Western media coverage? Maybe to hide defeats. Some ISIS beheading videos enough to deflect attention.
