If Neanderthals were that smart there'd still be Neanderthals.

Actually many hypothesize that the Neanderthals were of roughly equal intelligence to the Homo Sapiens, however, because they evolved in very isolated and cold climates, their populations remained small. By the time the Homo Sapiens began to expand, their population base was far higher, and that may be why they were able to gradually assimilate (this is the general theory now) and ultimately wipe out (through thousands of years of assimilation, conflict, co-existence) the Neanderthal populations which were numerically far smaller in size.

Probably a physical thing. Neanderthal remains in Iraq have shown they were killed by Sapiens. Sapiens could throw spears, Neanderthals physically couldn't.

The assimilation isn't thought to have happened any more than once - in what is now Israel - for Europeans and Caucasians. Elsewhere, they were killed or driven out.

Numbers and physicality and society.

Harsh times I guess. Scarce resources means populations have to kill, starve or be killed.
