People often recommend to me that I should take a genetic test to find out more about my ancestry. However I have also seen some people say that they will not really tell me anything.

1. Is it true that hpalogroups really reveal nothing about a person's ancestry?

2. Can the test detect ancestry of certain groups, i.e. Vikings?

1. They reveal, but standart 23andme test won't tell you much since it's not deep enough, you'll have to do a deeper ftdna test.

2. Yes, though Viking ancesty won't show up in autosomals since mix happened too long ago and distributed equaly among Brits for example, so only haplogroups can tell in this case.

Thank you for your answers.

I read somewhere that DNA tests cannot reveal Jewish ancestry which is something I am very interested in.

Is it true?

No it's not true, 23andme especially is very good at distinguishing jewish ancestry, there is some rate of mistake, but if you have more than 1% it's true.

But these genetic tests only measure the paternal line don't they? They cannot detect ancestry from your father's mother or your father's father's wife.

So if I take this test it will only be telling me about one line of ancestry and not the rest?

More or less true. You can compare your haplogroup to the rest of people from your country though.

No.

You're talking about haplogroups, which pass trough the direct maternal and paternal lines, while they test all of your chromosomes, which means that all of your lines.
