They are mostly indigenous. Provence is related to Italy [northern], very minor overlap with greeks [Marseille france], and then towards Germany/Belgium would be Frankish. Rudel and the few French posters here are more knowledgeable about it. Bretons cluster around the Irish and British. Normans probably too.

Northern French are closer to South Germans than to other Romance speakers

They aren't genetically related to any of those (not more than europeans are related to each other). They cluster north of iberians and italians and south of brits.

but along the borders is a bit different. south western French might have a pseudo Iberian look.

He asked about genetics, so my answer was based on what i've seen on genetic plots.

North Italians I'd guess

10% of France is of Italian descent, mainly North Italian. But I would estimate at least 5% are of Iberian descent.

to me it would be easiest to go by regions. but overall to me the French are just Romanized gauls [only a minority being franks or Germanic].

Romance people I would think refers basically to Italians, French, Spaniards and Portuguese. I would say maybe Northern Italians are more related to French, but it's just a guess.

French overall are genetically equidistant between Spanish and British, or taking it to further extremes...Norwegians and mainland Greeks. They're best described as an intermediate population not Northern or Southern European IMO.
